Have you notified the seller?
If they are not hepful you can open a dispute in the Resolution Centre if you paid with paypal.

That was my first (re)action. He replied that he was so sorry and that he had done his best to wrap the item (an old clock) adequately.
The wrapping was lousy: one layer of decaying kitchen towel held together by scotch tape!
I have now given the clock for professional repair. Cost estimate 200AUD.

If you have already given it to a repairer then you cannot open a dispute as it will not be in the condition in which it was received.
Why did you need to come here if you are getting it repaired?

guess they liked the clock and intended to keep it.

Well thats the chance you take with ebay goods. Its happened to me too and its probably happened to a lot of people dont worry the seller is probably trying to do their best. I mean it wasnt done on purpose and I would definitley say the item was wrapt in good faith. Chow,

"one layer of decaying kitchen towel held together by scotch tape"
is hardly proper wrapping for breakable goods!
Good faith indeed
