Unfortunately I think the chemicals they use in India in tanning is not handled n disposed of properly.
Work safety and environment concerns are non existant in India.
tazz, write back and say you buy leather by the container loads but won't buy from India because of their bad treatment of workers and the environment.

The OP did mention leathergoods, and India.
Never let it be said that stupid reality shows don't teach you anything.
While watching an episode of The Amazing Race (USA version) they went to India.
They had to help tan hides.
The tanning process involved urine. It was collected from all over the city to be used.
Tanning leather. Urine is full of urea, which degrades into ammonia.
Ammonia in water acts as a caustic but weak base. Its high pH breaks down organic material, making urine the perfect substance for ancients to use in softening and tanning animal hides. Soaking animal skins in urine also made it easier for leather workers to remove hair and bits of flesh from the skin.
