Does anyone live in Cairns?

Nothing important but I'm noticing more and more that people are pronouncingv it Cans,    like Cannes in the Riviera (except that Cannes in the Riviera has a silent S) I even heard it pronounced Cans on the ABC today.  Is this a new thing or iwhat?

.  How do locals pronounce it?

Someone please put me out of my misery as it's bugging me.

Bright, fair chance it is pronounced both ways by those that live there.

I have never heard Mackay pronounced as 'kay except by locals. Its always been Mack eye from afar.

I don't live there but I have spent quite considerable time on and around the Atherton Tablelands and I believe the correct pronunciation is Cair (rhymes with hair) ns.

An outer suburb of Beijing.

You have probably heard weather readers on tv prnounce the towns name as Cans when they read the weatha
