What is the difference between pickle relish and chutney

In your own thoughts please, I mean what do you think is the difference without google?

The reason I ask is I make chilli pickle (have been doing for about 30 years) and we have an abundance of chillies so my husband says I should make relish. Not to try a different recipe, he told me relish was different.

What do you think?

Re: What is the difference between pickle relish and chutney

This is Soulart's Chilli Jam Recipe

I have made it a couple of times and it's really good.  It wouldn't use up many of your chillis though.

Chilli Jam

From Soulart

about 6 ripe tomatoes

2 tbls olive oil

2 tbls red wine vinegar

2 tbls fish sauce

2 tsps crushed garlic

6 tsps chopped chilli

2 tsps chopped ginger

1 tsp tumeric

2 heaped tbls brown sugar

combine all ingredients in a heavy based saucepan....bring to the boil then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

pour into clean glass jar and store in fridge.

Re: What is the difference between pickle relish and chutney

The tomato relish I made was chunky. The chunkier the better. Bought ones may be smoother as they scrimp on the good stuff ...lumps of tomato, onion etc.

Re: What is the difference between pickle relish and chutney

Perhaps this is another one of those polony vs fritz vs devon things where each state has its own name for it. For me pickles are vegetable based, think cauliflower and currified or with mustard and can be more chunky. BUT I have a great old recipe for green tomato pickles, so who knows. Chutney and relish, to me, both mean the same thing, sweeter and fruit based.

I was just quoting the Rosella range up there ^^

You would use a lot more chillis in that one!

Re: What is the difference between pickle relish and chutney

When I was a kid it was always mustard pickles in a jar that was bright yellow.

Nothing you buy from supermarkets ever tastes as good as what you can make does it?

I made the green tomato pickles, but I think the Spring Gully ones worked out cheaper!
