Buyer wants full refund

Hi - I sold a used 35mm conpact (film) camera which I tested before listing it. Apart from not running a roll of film through it the camera worked fine.

I have now had a mesage from the buyer telling me it doesn't work. I replied explaining that the camera was tested before being listed but perhaps the battery may need replacing as it had been used previously. At the same time I offered to refund him 50% for the inconvenience.

So me shoots back a reply stating he wants a full refund plus postage!

So what's the score here - do I go along with him and give a full refund or what? For all I know he may have just decided he doesn't want it.

... and looking at the feedback he has left for others since joining eBay earlier this year  they're all negatives!

Cheers,

Tell him to either -

1. Take a photo of the damage that proves the camera is inoperable. Once you have this proof, refund him.

or, if the damage is internal,

2. Post the camera back, and upon testing, if the camera isnt working as he describes, you will refund (dont refund a cent til you receive the camera back).

Unfortunately, saying you tested it prior to postage isnt proof of anything.

Given that you're probably going to get a negative regardless, I'd give them nothing. Call their bluff. When they do leave a negative, contact eBay and ask for it to be removed. Tell them to look at this buyers feedback left for others. If they refuse to remove it (don't give up the first time), reply to it and leave the buyers username in the comment so everyone can see who it is. Something like "<username> is a serial negger. Check feedback left for others".

There is a chance they will open a dispute and if they do, you run the risk of them winning and then eBay will refund them and let them keep the camera. I would instruct them to post it back to you and you'll be more than happy to give them a full refund on its return. Hopefully they will be happy with doing that rather than opening a dispute.

You state you did not test with film in the camera - that is an issue in itself.  The shutter etc may work fine BUT older cameras if not used for a long time may have issues with the mechanisims that wind the film - have had this issue with a top end canon film camera of mine.

Actually I recant my statement and agree with tippytoes!!

I didnt notice where you said he appears to be a serial neg giver....

Youre going to get a defect anyway. Call his bluff, then call Ebay to get the neg removed. Dont give him a cent.

If the buyer says that it doesn't work then that's good enough for Ebay to refund him / her.Smiley Sad

Tell them to send it back, saves all the hassle.
