I run auctions so best match isn't really an issue for me so can't answer your questions about ranking. Most auction buyers refine to time ending soonest or newly listed. All I know is, if I increase my start prices, even just by a dollar, it sells quicker. Of course you can only increase so many time before it becomes over priced, so you can't go silly with it.
