Sold An Item Buyer was not happy as there was a rip on one of the pages

Buyer purchased the item unknown to me one of the pages has a rip. They sent pictures once I saw the pictures I refunded the money paid with out giving it a second thought. I told them they can keep the item as I never gave it a good check in the first place. Everything was done through eBay Messages No Dispute was opened. Will I get a defect fot doing this?

Thanks In Advance

I wouldn't think so.

Afterall if a seller decided to refund out of the goodness of their heart they should be able to.

(Gifting items)

Or sometimes a part refund may be done if postage turns out to be considerably cheaper etc.

As far as I know, without a case being opened, a refund through PayPal means the eBay system doesn't know about it.

If you refunded in full from paypal then yes you will.

Yep I broke an item packing it up a few weeks ago. So I just refunded in full from paypal. I didn't cancel it in ebay and a few days later I had a defect for transaction I cancelled.

Wow, that's wrong.

I can think of many reasons for refunding without there being a problem.

Perhaps eBay have figured some would coerce buyers to not opening cases.

Sorry spotty, looks like you need to cop it on the chin.

Yep I actually forgot at the time to send payment instead of refunding. That is the only way around it is to send a payment to the buyer adding a note for eg. Refund for ebay item number such and such. So if the buyer then tries to say you didn't refund at least it's on the note if paypal check. Not ideal but the only way to avoid the defect if not cancelling.

To avoid a defect before refunding email the buyer through ebay messages and ask them to confirm through the ebay message system  that they would like a refund and for the order to be cancelled.

Once they have confirmed through the ebay message system you put in a cancellation request through ebay and at the same time you can request the refund be processed automatically.

Well if that's not a gross asumption.

Good tip on sending funds rather than refund. giving-thumbs-up-winking-smiley-emoticon.gif

Another good solution jen.
