I have not offered International Postage before, and have had a request to send an item to the USA.
What would be the best way to change my listing so that he can purchase from me?

Under the "International Postage" section when editing an item:
1. Select "Flat rate cost to all buyers".
2. Under "Post to" select "Custom Location"
3. Tick the "United States" checkbox.
4. Enter a value of $14.10 or higher if it's a heavier item.
Save the changes.
Use the Australia Post postage calculator to determine the cost.
Always add in 50 cents to a dollar to make sure you're covered when eBay takes their cut out of the postage amount., and if you charge for packaging supplies and handling.

If you don't want to completely change the listing but want it so that just he can bid/buy you could make him an 'exempt' bidder (buyer block exemption list)
http://offer.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BidderPermitLogin
That would then allow him to buy/transact with you even if your listings aren't set up for worldwide or shipping to US etc

Many thanks. I have followed your advice and the buyer has placed a bid.
