The last few item I have purchased on ebay have been paid automatically through my PayPal account without me logging in and being able to choose the cash option through my bank account, or a credit card. I am finding this incredibly annoying because I don't always want to pay cash. Also, if I leave funds in my PayPal account, those funds are automatically used for payment, again without me having the option of choosing a credit card.
Is there a way to stop these automatic payments and let me decide how I want to pay?

There was a thread on this a while ago.
Fair bit of reading, but your answer is in there somewhere

somewhere you have checked the box that allows this - there has been a thread about this before. Unfortunately I can't remember where it is, but someone will come along soon who will know.

This might be it - sign into your paypal account and check your security settings where it says STAY LOGGED IN

This is your post from 8/4/16 and this is what is happening to me. I have read your thread and been into my PayPal account and still cannot find anything ticked that allows them to do this. The only thing that could force payment onto a credit card is no funds in my PayPal account and no funds in my bank account. I am going to try this next time I buy something, maybe tomorrow.

I paid on a laptop, and I didn't get a page that looked like that at all.
When I hit the button 'pay now' I expected the paypal page to come up,
so I could confirm the details - total cost, address etc
I didn't get that page. It went straight to 'Thanks for your purchase'

Thanks, I looked at all this and there is nothing ticked that allows ebay or PayPal to automatically open my account.

Are you using a mobile device? I understand that the ap is very hard to see.

No - I only make purchases on my computer.

Since that thread, I have made a number of purchases and it has reverted
to the old method for me.
No automation, so I'm glad. Mind you, I did nothing about it, it just reverted by itself.
Nothing untoward happened in the time it was doing the auto payment thingie.
Next time you buy, look very carefully at the whole page. Change of payment method
may be in a smaller print and you have missed it.
