FOO News

001.JPG

As can be seen in the photo, Foo has had a blood test done today.

i noticed a swelling on his snout on friday morning so took him in to the vets friday afternoon.

the swelling is thought to be a tooth abcese.

whilst at the vets the vet noticed looking at Foos weight he had lost over 2 kilos since last december and about 5 kilos in a year!

hence the blood test, i will get the results tomorrow afternoon.

hes on anti biotics for his swelling and its allready gone down since friday.

the vet his holding off on the tooth problem until she gets the results from the blood test.

hes 11 years old, i'm not panicing but i am worried.

fingers crossed its not what it might be, cant even say it.

Weell - to be quite honest....................lol

David - you are very aware of your - so called - probs.

So really they should not be ' probs ' - you deal with them in your own way.

Don't think for one moment - those of us - that seem - very confident - very organised - and - very able - are not on the inside - like a squirrel trying to cross the road.

There is fear for all of us - you really - are not any different.

Re: FOO News

recieved an email from GAPSA, i think its just a generic reply to say they recieved my adoption aplication.

Hello,

Thank you for submitting your application to adopt a GAP SA Greyhound.  Greyhounds make fantastic pets and we look forward to assisting you in finding your perfect match.

Each of our greyhounds is matched to applicants according to the needs of the greyhound along with what the applicant is looking for in a pet.  Once we find a suitable match, you will be contacted with information regarding the greyhound and from that point; a visit will be arranged in order that you can meet your potential match.

Although personal circumstances will have an effect on your application (such as suitability with children or cats), please be aware, the more specific you are with your requests, the longer it may take to find a suitable greyhound for you.  Often you may have a picture in your mind of your ideal dog, but we encourage you to be open minded when considering your requests because there is a good chance, once you meet a greyhound, you will fall in love with them no matter their colour or sex.

Have you heard of the Foster-To-Adopt process?  This option is open to ALL potential adopters and may help you to find your perfect match sooner.  You would assist in teaching the greyhound pet behaviours and assisting the transition from kennel to family life prior to formal adoption.  If you think you would be interested in this option or would like more information regarding this process, please contact the GAP team on 8243 7124.

As with all greyhounds, they are work in progress and will still need further training, socialisation and maybe some management strategies to truly thrive in your home. The GAP team can provide you with lots of hints and tips to help, but please be prepared to be patient and spend some time working with your new greyhound.

We will be in touch to keep you up to date on the progress of your application.  We also encourage you to follow the GAP SA Facebook page and visit our website www.gapsa.org.au to remain up to date with details of available dogs.

In the meantime we have attached some useful information regarding greyhound adoption and should you have any further questions, please contact the GAP team on 8243 7124.

Many thanks for your interest and support, we look forward to helping you find the most suitable greyhound for you and your family.

Still does not make him/her any more lovable in my opinion.....but horses for courses......Scotties and Westies are not everyone's cup of tea either.

My first dog was a Corgi so it would appear that my tastes run to small terrier type dogs from the UK.

Taffy was a bit of a celebrity...his grandsire was the model used for the Royal Doulton Corgi that is still available today.

Re: FOO News

in my life we have had labrador,

a lab cross boxer (yes our girl and a neighbours boxer found love when no one was watching)

for a while we had mother and daughter.

then i got the idea a beagle would be good, and she was but a deformed spine ended her life at 3

then my dad got a border collie puppy from a local farmer, she too was lovely.

then we got ellie a cross between labrador and german shepard (and we suspect several other breeds in her too)

then FOO.

of all the dogs FOO made the biggest impact on me.

before him i liked dogs, now i love greyhounds.

Re: FOO News

Some of the larger breeds of dogs are wonderful but not for me as we have a fairly small backyard.

My daughter had German Shepherds and Rottweilers both as pets and working dogs...she ran a guard dog company for many years.

She also rented part of a property which was a greyhound training establishment.   She was their resident security person and vet nurse as they also bred the greyhounds there.

One of the best dogs that she had was a stry, found in Centennial Park.  She was real Heinz variety dog....about all we were certain of was that there was some cattle dog in her.....my daughter said she had a touch of airplane in her too as she had huge floppy ears which were always flapping in the breeze.

I would love another dog but with my mobility problems it is just not possible.  I doubt that I would have considered another Corgi or Westie though....both of them were such special little dogs that it would be very hard for another dog to come close to either of them in temperament.

Re: FOO News

We looked after a gorgeous senior bordie collie that we renamed "Rainbow" a few years ago;  we had to find her a new home because she had been so poorly looked after by her previous owner.  She loved to round up our two Siamese cats we had at the time and they seemed to love Rainbow and 'agreed' to be pushed around as though they were sheep.

Ultimately, with the help of friends, we found her a wonderful home on a 50 acre farm with a family of Mum, Dad and two children aged 9 and 11.

The dog immediately settled in and went willingly with them and never looked back ... as soon as she arrived at the farm, they rang us to say she had jumped straight into their little dam with the children and had a wonderful time splashing around.  She lived for another five and a half years so happy and loved.

We didn't go to visit her because we thought it might unsettle her but we were kept informed of what she was doing the whole time.

Re: FOO News

David im so sorry to read this tragic news. I know how hard it is. In time it will feel a bit better but it takes time. I found getting a other dog was a big distraction as you have to look after them so Rosie will help....they know  when we need love.

I notice the RSPCA usualy have several greyhounds available . I got my Violet from them and she is a lovely  dog and they were very honest about her personality and tempriment they seem to screen and train the dogs very well so perhaps if you get to lonely you could try them.

thank you for the kind thoughts, i'm doing ok most of the time, keeping busy gardening and doing a 'spring clean' in the house.

i'm still not sleeping so well, waking up at 4am and 'hes not there' Smiley Sad

so i get up and make a cup of tea and fiddle on my computer.

i got FOO via GAPSA and i'm going through them again. they did such a good job with FOO.

yes its a wait but i know the dog they fit to me will be the best i could wish for.

as i have Rosie its important the dogs ok with cats and GAP put them into a home with cats as a foster situation so there will be no trouble.

convincing Rosie a new greyhound is ok might be another thing LOL

she might think shes the boss now for sure.

it'll all be fine i'm convinced.

Re: FOO News

David Im sure there is the right dog out there just waiting to come and live with you and Rosie. I lost one of my beloved GSD's in a similar fashion to your FOO, the pain never really goes away but it does ease in time.

I now only have 1 GSD, she is 11 next week so goodness know how long she will be with me, atm she is fine, so I just take 1 day at a time.
