Woman Wins Right To Sterilize Self After Legal Battle-

Holly Brockwell wanted to get sterilized but faced a mountain of resistance from doctors trying to block her decision. After a four year legal battle, she has finally won. "Holly Brockwell is happy to report that she isn't expecting kids — not now, and not ever. She just won a four-year legal battle with the National Health Service for the right to be sterilized.

Brockwell first asked her doctor about getting her tubes tied when she was 26 and was met with a series of patronizing comments from healthcare providers, according to The Telegraph. One doctor reportedly suggested that Brockwell's boyfriend get a vasectomy because she was "too young" to think about such a permanent birth control decision.

After speaking publicly about her choice, Brockwell was bombarded with online harassment and violent threats...

It's common for women around the world to face discrimination when they seek out permanent birth control. In 2015, 31-year-old, Virginia-based Reddit user riveramblnc shared her experience with condescending doctors and spending months on a waiting list before she could get permanent birth control.”

Re: Woman Wins Right To Sterilize Self After Legal Battle

If there were mental implications, like developmental delay, it never would have been approved through the courts. I know 3 parents who have tried to get hysterectomies for their teenage daughters because they have major psychotic attacks each month when their period starts. All have been through the courts and all were refused. The reason being, it takes away their right to be a mother.

They're never going to be a mother. 2 out of the 3 can't even dress or feed themselves or have any type of conversation. The other can dress and feed herself and you can have a basic conversation with her, but she has the mental capacity of a 3yo (at best). I get angry at the courts when they refuse in situations like this, because it's not them that has to deal with the terror these girls face each month because they don't know what's going on.

The latter is now institutionalised because she became too much of a handful. Every month when her period started she's go ballistic and smash the house to pieces. Nearly every month they were having to replace at least one window. The house was full of smashed furniture. Every wall had holes in them. She has now had several rounds of ECT, which has made a big difference, but it's just not safe for her at home. She's 24yo now and quite tall and VERY strong. Her mother is concerned that as she is a VERY attractive girl (which she is), that someone is going to take advantage of her and have an unwanted pregnancy. Despite her mental ages, she still has normal urges that females get.

She's on Depo Provera now and has been for a couple of years, but it hasn't completely stopped her periods, so there are still outbursts. I wonder if the courts are going to raise a child in the event that something bad does happen?

Mental implication does not mean developmental issues.  She could have been treated for depression or something like that.

Actually, plenty of people were able to have their children children with Down Syndrome sterilised; in some countries that is the norm.  It certainly is a good idea because if woman has mental age of 5 but sexual instincts of adult, there are problems.  When I was a kid, there was a young Down's Syndrome girl who from the age of 14 stood in the lane behind the pub with her skirt up, and every drunk had sex with her, and she had one abortion after another, until she was sterilised.

That's the problem, they have the mental age of a small child, but the sexual instincts of an adult. It gets hard because you can't explain to them what's going on. You also can't explain to them not to do certain things. They go with their urges.
