Holly Brockwell wanted to get sterilized but faced a mountain of resistance from doctors trying to block her decision. After a four year legal battle, she has finally won. "Holly Brockwell is happy to report that she isn't expecting kids — not now, and not ever. She just won a four-year legal battle with the National Health Service for the right to be sterilized.

Brockwell first asked her doctor about getting her tubes tied when she was 26 and was met with a series of patronizing comments from healthcare providers, according to The Telegraph. One doctor reportedly suggested that Brockwell's boyfriend get a vasectomy because she was "too young" to think about such a permanent birth control decision.

After speaking publicly about her choice, Brockwell was bombarded with online harassment and violent threats...

It's common for women around the world to face discrimination when they seek out permanent birth control. In 2015, 31-year-old, Virginia-based Reddit user riveramblnc shared her experience with condescending doctors and spending months on a waiting list before she could get permanent birth control.”

Just one question, why would you bother getting a hysterectomy when you turn 50? Of course it's none of my business but it does seem odd that youd be so keen to have that procedure done at that stage in life...

Don't want it, don't need it, get rid of it. One less organ to worry about having issues with later in life. Plus, after having a lifetime of issues with it already, would be nice to be rid of it once and for all.

Why wouldn't they have removed it earlier if it has caused you health issues? Sorry for being nosey I'm just trying to understand the motive.  You assume you dont need it but removing it can cause other health problems down the track as well...  And there are many possible side effects from this procedure, including injury to nearby organs, early onset menopause (if ovaries are removed), blood clots in legs and/or lungs, infection, heavy bleeding and pain during sexual intercourse.  But I'm sure you're aware of this...

They wouldn't remove it because they said I might want to have kids. It would still have worked for that, but it made my life a living misery at times which didn't seem to matter to them.

I am fully aware of the risks involved and I am also fully aware that for me, the benefits far outweigh the risks. I am unsure which other nearby organs you are referring to that could be injured. The only thing remotely near it is the rectum and bladder and they are identified and protected during the procedure.

If you're referring to major blood vessels, then the aorta and vena cava have bifurcated higher up just below the kidneys. The iliac and femoral arteries are nowhere near it. They run along the lateral posterior abdominal wall with the ureters. Other major vessels like the inferior mesenteric artery are nowhere near it. Nor are the renal arteries. My anatomy is in the correct place, so no issues with any of those structures being where they shouldn't be.

I know a lot of women that have had a hysterectomy and dont have bleeding or pain when they have sex.

I had my a tubal ligation done in my thirties as I did not want any more children, I had 3.

The surgeon asked if my mother told me to have it done, I said no I have 3 children and my mother is dead, surgeon said right lets do it.

Best thing ever no more putting chemicals into my body chemicals the gave me a Blood Clot in my leg at 28 and 2 weeks in Hospital

The thing is, there is nothing to bleed from after the hysterectomy, so not sure how one can suffer from heavy bleeding. Most women that do have painful sex find it quite a bit easier after a hysterectomy.

Of course "most" people dont have any side effects.  But the fact is there are certain risks associated with the procedure (as there are with any surgical procedure).. Thinking that there aren't or that "it wont happen to me" or explaining away possible side effects is just dismissive imo.

I guess my gripe is I just dont agree with unecessarily removing organs from ones body.  And I think that if your health has been affected for so long then maybe a second or third or even forth opinion would've been justified in trying to find a physician who could help overcome those health issues. Rather than toughing it out for 20 years until your age is deemed suitable... 20 years is a long time to have to deal with something like that.

I sincerely wish you all the best though.  And I apologise if I sound contrary, just think people should consider all options before going under the knife.  🙂

Good for her.  I was sure at age 14 I never wanted kids and I still feel the same now (and now thank goodness I'm too old to worry about it).  Not everyone wants to be a parent....and not everyone who makes that choice regrets it or changes their mind either.

For all those parents out there who think kids are the greatest things since sliced bread, good for you, but not everyone sees it the same way.  I wasn't the maternal kind and maybe the woman in the article wasn't either.  Better to have none than to have children that aren't wanted.

As I said in an earlier comment, I am fully aware of all the risks involved with any surgery. There are actually more risks involved with getting tattoos, botox and body piercing, not to mention all the cosmetic procedures that people have in a doctors rooms, without having an anaesthetist present or any resuscitation equipment in the event there is a reaction to drugs.

I have had far more than 4 different opinions and sadly, they all came back with the same answers. Unfortunately, it doesn't go away until menopause or hysterectomy. I have tried many different treatments, which include surgery (which gives temporary relief) and different drugs. It's actually been closer to 35 years that I've been suffering with this. Pretty much since my first period.

As for the actual surgery, I have full faith in my work colleagues of 30 years that they will get me through safely, like they do with everyone else they treat. I am not deluded enough to think it won't happen to me, but after already having 21 general anaesthetics, I feel pretty confident that getting the same drugs and the same anaesthetists will have no more of an affect on me than any other time. Poor outcomes are pretty rare these days.

As for dying on the table, while it can happen, you've got more chance of pulling of first prize in lotto. In 30 years, I have seen 27 people die on the table. 12 of those were severe road trauma and weren't expected to survive, but you still have to try. 8 of them were organ donors, so were already dead. 6 of them were ruptured aneurysms, which often die on the table (or within 24 hours). The other one threw a fat embolus, which is a high risk for the type of surgery they were having. They were old and frail and fell into the high risk category anyway.

I can give you the stats of post op complications too if you like. As I said, I am fully aware of all the risks. Thank you got your concern though 🙂

There might be health/mental implications in this woman's case, which the newspaper conveniently left out.  I had my tubes tied in my early 30s without any problems from the doctors.  There is definitely quite considerable % of people changing their minds, and I can see some people trying to sue the doctor for doing the op while the woman was fragile.  While i never regretted getting my tubes done, for about 12 months afterwards my periods were very heavy and painful.  I, who all my life swam, cycled, played tennis, jumped with my horse, and did everything else like normal, and considered women who felt in need to pamper themselves in that time of months as wimps, the 12 months after the op I stayed in bed at least one day each month.   Several of my friends also experienced the same problems
