Buyer used laptop for 179 days, now want a refund

Long story short, sold a $1500 laptop 179 days ago to a buyer. They want to return it, I said no way, so they filed a paypal dispute and escalated the claim on the 179th day. They got all sorts of excuses, I didn't know the laptop was bought for a 16 year old. Sigh...

 

Trouble is I have closed that paypal account a while ago. when I switched from sole trader. I can't even log in to respond to their claim. Paypal says if I don't respond with in 10 days they will refund the buyer. I emailed paypal with my side of the story about two days ago. Paypal today send anther email requesting information or will hold my funds.

 

What should I do? The paypal account was closed before the dispute was filed and since the transaction happened so long ago, Australia post probably don't even have tracking info left. I can't even find the tracking number now... probably have to dig up old receipts...

 

Will paypal take money from my bank account or credit card if the dispute is ruled to buyer's favour? As I said I can't even login to my old paypal account and respond to this ridiculous claim.

I would be more inclined to go by what the T&Cs on PayPal's site say than something like that, though, as I do recall the information you're referring to and the T&Cs now completely contradict what was said.

Rang PayPal, told them my story, got transferred to a claim specialist, she added my response to the case, only took a few minutes.

Just got an email from paypal the case has been decided in my favor

Great outcome. Glad to see some common sense has prevailed.
Good on you for your persistence it has paid off in this case.

Buyer got full refund in the end... just because their underaged son want this year's model. After recovering data of the returned laptop, the whole family was using it happily for 6 months.

 

DO WHATEVER YOU WANT IN 6 MONTHS AND GET A FULL REFUND!

Buyer obviously knew what he was trying to do. I mean really is it just coincidence that they lodge a dispute on day 179? Total scam by the sound of it.

 

Was the decision reversed after PayPal found in your favour, or did PayPal refund the buyer from their own pocket? Was the laptop returned?

this is the very reason why i stopped selling on greedybay. they gave buyers all this power to rort the system.

being a seller on dreedybay is like having a computer virus floating around in the system that has 180 days to attack.

i take my hat off to all greedybay sellers...
