Do I have to return item brought in Australia to China for a refund?

I purchased a mobile phone from a seller here in Australia. The phone does not perform properly and when I contacted the seller I was told that I would have to return it to China to obtain my refund.

 

Do I really have to send it all the way to China at a hefty postage cost when I brought the item from a seller here in Australia?
