When I enter a bid should I enter the maximum I want to Pay?

When ebay asks you to place a bid should I put in the next amount or the maximum amount I want to pay? If I do the latter will it automatically take the bid to that amount or will there be automatic bidding between me and the other bidders?

When you enter your maximum bid, only enough of it will be used to keep you in front, until you either win the item or are outbid.
