can a seller end an auction with bids on it if someone sends them a email with a better offer then what the highest bid is?

I was the highest bidded on a item tonight the item was ended due to the seller being messaged and accepting a higher bid is this allowed?? I had a bid of $56 down but my limit was $100 and I would of gone higher if I had to.
