is there a way to auto bid or similiar, as every time i have tried to bid for an item it is outbid as soon as i hit enter, and have never managed to win an item

Yes

Just place the maximum amount you would be willing to pay in the bid amount space and if another bidder has a higher amount than you you entered then you will be out bid.

If you become the highest bidder then others will be out bid if they place a bid less than your highest amount.
