Last week I won an item and when it arrived it was damaged. I contacted the seller who requested tht it be posted back. I have done this. How long should I wait for a replacement before lodging a claim.

I would be opening a Paypal case before the 40 day no matter what else happens.

Assume you paid with paypal.
So did you return the item via click and send or signature required post?
If you can not prove postage back to the seller then you will lose a dispute if you opened and escalated it.
If you did send with tracking then open the dispute and escalate to a claim and call paypal with the tracking number.
No matter how nice a seller sounds all ways open a dispute and escalate and return to the address given by paypal for your protection.

Wanna bet?
Just evidence of postage is enough, or it has always been for my Paypal claims

putney. Sorry I did not answer the other posts fully. I paid with Paypal, always use this, when I posted at post office they gave me a receipt with a tracking number on it. They said that now all parcels have a tracking number on them. I did ask them the safest way and they told me this was it. I appear to have been a little naive from advice of yourself and Moorna and Sparklz. If it all goes pear shape I will know next time.

that's good Jean, the tracking receipt should suffice.
Paypal are not aware that registered post was discontinued for parcels in Aust this month, and dont seem to have worked out a new ''acceptable'' policy yet.
goodluck, come back here if you need more advice.

Unfortunately I think if the seller knows what they are doing the limited tracking for ordinary post without signature required will not be enough. Like the red and express satchels they only show delivery to the nearest mail depot so unless they happen to live in the same suburb the seller can say they have not received the parcel and you have nothing with even the correct postcode.
There may also be a problem with the address, if you go through the Paypal process then the seller gives Paypal the return address to pass on to you so if they are shonky all they have to do is give a different address for return and even if you had cast iron proof of delivery it would not wash as it would be to the wrong address.
All the above is worst case scenario but at least I hope it means you will know how to proceed better if you need to make a claim again.
