Very basic question. If I have clicked on the 'Buy it now' button, have I committed to buy the item? Or does committment come further into the process?

Unless a seller has instant payment via PayPal setup clicking on the buy now button is taken as committing to the sale regardless of whether the confirm button is clicked or not.
At that point if you don't proceed the seller is sent a message asking to send you an invoice.
Sales that are ignored at that point can result in an unpaid item dispute being opened by the seller after the required timeframe because they have already been charged fees by ebay.
If you click Buy Now accidently or change your mind before completing the transaction you should message the seller and tell them it was mistake and ask to cancel.
That way good sellers should initiate a cancellation with no penalty to either party and the seller gets the fees back.

You are committing to buy it, but you will get a second tab that comes up that asks you to confirm.
That is what has always happened to me, anyway.
So your first click isn't final, you have to confirm after it.
There are some items apparently where they are not only buy it now but require instant payment. They may be different, I don't know.

The ones that are buy it now with immediate payment required don't lock you in until you have paid. Until you pay, another buyer can buy it. Payment is through Paypal. (Helps sellers avoid non-payers)
But with any item best not to hit "buy it now" unless you actually want it ๐
In the past I have made purchases on a mobile where "buy it now" went straight to pay now without a confirm step ๐ฎ

Thanks for that, Allfixelectrical. It is clear to me now. I will exercise a little more care, in the future. Had to double up on a purchase, to pacify the seller!
