I recently accidently ordered some strings twice.
Any attempts to rectify the situation were futile.
I didn't realize I was in Ebay when I went to the checkout page and I was on someone else 's page. so I stopped the transaction and went to my Ebay and ordered them thru that.
Now I'm getting pay or else messages from Ebay and there is nothing I can do about it as the onus is on the seller to cancel.
I've paid for what I intended to order by contacting the seller direct and doing it over the phone.
Why do they have such a stupidly convoluted system with no get out of jail facilities?
Any system that doesn't account for human error is seriously flawed.

I don't quite understand what you mean by that, but if you go through the confirm and commit to purchase process twice, then no matter how it's done, you have purchased twice.
Seller's are charged fees on every sale, but the unpaid item process is the only way to guarantee that they aren't charged fees on a sale that isn't paid for. Some sellers will send through a transaction cancellation request, but others are hesitant to do this because it then becomes reliant on the buyer agreeing to the cancellation and often times they don't, even though they have requested it, so some sellers have decided on standard protocol and won't deviate from it, I suppose.

Maybe you have split personality, as you have not only accidently bought two sets of strings but you have accidently started two threads on the same topic as well!
(I'm just kidding)

As far as I can see you have only bought one set of strings. Purchased on:

The system is convoluted only if you decide to pay with your CC, which you obviously did. If you used PP = most recommended, then the payment would be automatically noted and you would not be getting demands for payment, which by the way are automatically sent by eBay. Contact the seller and tell him to mark your item as paid.
