Feedback Etiquette

Hi all,

I'm very new to eBay and have made about 25 purchases in the past week or so.  I'm yet to leave feedback for my purchases as I'm not sure what is appropriate timing.  A bit of background, I paid for my purchases promptly, in most instances the goods I have bought have been shipped by the seller (s).  But, I really can't leave feedback until the purchase cycle is complete .... can I?  Until I receive the things I've bought, how can I leave honest feedback?

So, what's the etiquette involved?  Am I annoying the seasoned eBay'ers by not leaving feedback if they've shipped the goods so promptly?  I don't see how I can truly rate something I haven't received yet.

(I have left feedback for only one purchase, I just assumed that's what I was supposed to do - particularly given how quickly the goods were marked as shipped).

Thanks in advance 🙂

they slap you in the face by not leaving any feedback for you,.............. Sellers on eBay, who have the manners to say they appreciate my business via feedback, the other type are really their own worst enemies, chasing customers away in droves.

I would not know if seller did not leave FB for me; I never bother to look.  🙂

And i buy items because I need/want them and because the seller is offering good deal, and posts promptly, and the item was as described, definitely NOT because they give me FB.

As I have separate selling and buying accounts, the buying FB does not help me to inflate my selling FB.  However, I do understand that new sellers, who wish to increase their score, get bit put off by not getting FB, but that is just tough luck; FB is totally voluntary and for buyer it is IRRELEVANT.

Wish we could leave negs for posters who drag up old threads, especially to tell people that you would rather buy from a carp seller who leaves you feedback first rather than from an exemplary seller who doesn't ]:)

sorry Junkie.   this 'old' thread is clearly still alive. If you don't like it, don't read it.. easy..

Here's a 'trend' I have noticed..   I am a buyer only and 99% of the time the seller gives automatic feedback as soon as I pay.   However,  some sellers are now starting to WAIT for my feedback before they give theirs...   but - hang on ,  I have already fulfilled MY part of the deal   so seller can give feedback right away.  I will of course reciprocate as soon as I get the merchandice   i.e. when seller has completed his part of the transaction.....   Why would sellers DELAY their feedback to a buyer who has ordered and paid ??

And you can't win in this forum..... People complain that yet another thread on the same topic has be opened rather an looking for old threads and then people get criticised for re-opening an old thread..... Which is it to be???

I am more of a buyer than seller and I think it is extremely rude for a seller to wait for my feedback to leave theirs.

As you said jpeterson.... I have fulfilled my part of the transaction and therefore I should get my feedback.

But feedback is supposed to be for the entire transaction, not just bits of it. And buyer feedback is essentially meaningless, so why do you care?

As neither of you have obviously read this thread, you might be interested to know that one of eBay's seller automations allows the seller to automatically leave positive feedback on receipt of same from the buyer. So eBay don't have a problem with sellers leaving feedback after the transaction is complete.

And, most important, feedback is voluntary.

You have fulfilled the one true obligation you have after confirming a purchase, yes, but it's not the only thing you can do to make a transaction a positive one, and once you have paid, there are a lot of things that can still be done that make a transaction decidedly negative. Just because you may feel paying for an item is the most you can do to justify an instant positive, doesn't mean the seller feels the same way, and they have every right to leave commenting on the transaction until they feel it assesses the entire transaction, and therefore [potentially] becomes more meaningful than just a pat on the back for paying.

yeah, right.  Try selling a dozen items, or even just a few items, and see if you feel the same way.

and just a point of clarification, I am a seller who DOES leave feedback after a buyer pays.  However, I choose to do that and do not expect the sellers I buy from to do the same.  Each member can decide when they prefer to leave feedback, or if they do leave feedback.

I leave feedback 100% of the time but only receive feedback around 90% of the time.  I'm okay with that because feedback is voluntary and if those eBayers I transact with as either a seller or buyer decide not to leave me feedback then I respect their choice.

Try selling something to a buyer who receives feedback on payment who goes on to try and claim a perfectly good item is not as described and asks for a partial or even full refund with the implication they will leave a neg if you don't comply. You may find your perspective changing so at least you don't have to leave them any feedback at all.
