Item broken in transit due to inadequate packaging

I have received an item I purchased, a large stoneware bread bin.  It is in pieces and it is very evident that the packaging was inadequate.  It's a shame - it was just what I'd been looking for.  But anyway...  I don't think it was intentional but it is likely due to inexperience in posting breakables.  Initially he was only proposing pick-up, but agreed to post, and I agreed to take the risk.  But I did trust that he would go to reasonable lengths to protect it.

I've been reading the recent post about a broken lampshade, and now see why it can be better to pay with paypal.  I had a bad experience with paypal in the past and have always preferred to pay by cheque.

The seller is not appreciating my claims that the packaging was inadequate, and has already refused to consider reimbursement.

He is saying I need to make a claim with the Post Office.  That's a palava as it's a big thing to lug about, with no vehicle...

All in all, disappointing.

If I do take it to the post office, I think they'll be of the same opinion.  If they declare the packaging inadequate, what then? Reaction so far has been such that my impression is that the seller won't change his refusal.  I hope I'm wrong but that is what my instinct is saying.

I would appreciate advice on the matter.

This is the Australian board.

I would ask on the UK board so that you can get advice that is specific to the UK site 🙂

It sounds like AP would reject the claim if packaging wasn't adequate , even if you paid with PayPal I doubt there would something that covers the incident .

You took the risk and it's a shame that it turned out this way . The seller should have packed it better and yes the seller is right as AP needs to see the packaging . By all means try AP . I don't think there is much  else you can do .

What you can do is set up a PayPal account and use that for future purchases.
