Misleading Currency Conversion!

Am I the only one frustrated by eBay's misleading currency conversion?

Most of the time its not a lot of money but as I purchase more expensive items from overseas it becomes a bigger concern, particularly in USD.

Considering eBay owns Paypal there should be a lot better fluency,

Ill give you an example below;

One item i ordered was listed

US $131.96
AU $127.77

+ US $39.99
   AU $38.72

   postage

So thats $171.95 USD
and $166.49 AUD according to eBay.

As for the Paypal transaction
$171.95 US turns into $172.15 AUD

Now forgetting what the actual exchange rate is at the moment and how little amount that example shows, it feels misleading, you go off eBays conversion only to find your paying more by Paypal, even when Paypal is owned by eBay.  It should be more universal, fluid.

Im about to buy a much more expensive item of eBay from the US, but all im concerned about is how much more Paypal is actually going to charge me!

Anyone else share this concern?

I always love it when someone flounces in here ranting and raving. Makes for a fun evening. Love it even more when they drag up a 3yo thread to express their disgruntlement. When all the legal stuff starts being spouted I wonder why they even bother coming in here for a rant, when they could just abuse someone over the phone.

Also love it when someone dares disagree with someone and they are automatically accused of working for eBay. If I had a dollar for every time someone has said that,  I wouldn't be sitting here at work on a Friday night.

You'll be hard pressed to find anyone here that cares. You might know all the big words and phrases with numbers after them, but we know how the system works. Therefore, we know that it is in fact cheaper to have PayPal make the conversion.  Not because we work for eBay or PayPal, but because we've done our homework.

It has more than whiskers, it's completely decomposed!

In defense....the latest complaint is exactly the same as the OP and has had exactly the same answer.  Nothing has changed since the thread made it's debut.

Many of the dodo threads have been on subjects where the rules/prices or whatever have changed so much as to be unrecognisable.

WOW purchased an item from overseas and I don't mind so much the conversion rate but the fee that paypal charged to convert was around 14% that is ridiculous!

I think you need to check your maths......the conversion fee is 3.5% if you are converting the Canadian or US dollars and 4% for all other currencies.

The exact fee charged was 10.85%.

Item cost $94.96 but it cost me $103.71

Just replying to the recent poster that decided to post to this old thread and how nothing has changed in 4 years

Are you using the ebay etimate of the price or the actual paypal rate of exchange when you say the item was$94.96?

Perhaps you need to read back on this thread and see why there will be a difference between the ebay estimate and the paypal actual cost.

The conversion fee is definitely not in excess of 10%
