Paypal for pick up item

Hi,

I've recently won an auction for a reasonably expensive item ($500) which is pick up only. I bid assuming that I'd go and make sure the item was as described, hand over the cash and all would be sweet.

The seller is insisting on payment being made by Paypal before pick up. It's been a few years since I've used either eBay or Paypal but I remember that Paypal isn't advised for pick up items.

Basically what happens if I pay then get down there and find the item has been incorrectly described etc? I'm assuming because it's pick up that I'd have no Paypal protection. I'd just feel more comfortable paying cash, and I would have assumed the seller would have preferred it to since they wouldn't have to pay fees.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Gav

They can add it IF it is in the postage costs.

They can not add it as an extra after the sale.

Sorry, but this is simply not the case.

Payment options and post options for each listing are two separate entries, representing two separate listing conditions.

Even if you have ticked COD and really thought it meant cash on pickup - the  postage options for pick up only in a listing show no postage - local pick up only - when you are creating a listing.

For the protection of both of us I would prefer to come and inspect the item and then pay in cash if it is as described, should that not be acceptable I will choose Cash on Delivery as my payment method and will hand over the cash when you deliver!

I am surprised PJ that you are implying that COD is somehow a type of personal service provided by seller, when it is a postal service offered by Australia Post and other carriers.

As I have pointed out in earlier posts, payment options and post options are two separate listing conditions.

In a pick up only listing the standard postal service offered is none which displays as Pickup only: Free  -  there is no mention of delivery, if buyer wants a COD postal service, a seller is able to quote a charge for a carrier service.

thecatspis if the buyer selects this option and then refuses to accept the delivery the seller will end up with all costs including the return postage.

Not a smart move on a sellers part ]:)

Yes I know. It has a number of risks to the seller.

However, my posts were simply trying to correct the misleading posts made by other posters regarding the COD option.

It means exactly what it says, cash on delivery so if a buyer selects that option the seller can choose to use AP, a courier who offers the service or deliver it themselves and collect the cash.
