I paid $30 (half postage, half for item). The item was not packed properly, it was a box of chalk inside another bigger postage box, no packing around, broken, disintegrated, some slid out of box. I let the seller know, I asked for a refund because there was no effort to protect these obvious delicate items. He said send it back - then I will get $7.50 refund. Basically if I do that I will outlay $45 to receive $7.50 credit and no item. What would you all do? I hate leaving bad feedback but how do I let others know this business just doesn't pack properly.

If you send it back, then you should be receiving the full amount back.
You can lodge an Item not as described case against the seller where eBay/PayPal will ask you to send the item back by a trackable means. This postage will come out of your pocket but once eBay sees that the tracking shows that it has been sent back then you should get the full amount of $30 back excluding what you paid to send the item back.
I would still urge you to talk to your seller about it first and kindly ask to have the full amount and you will pay to return the item. Be nice and don't start threatening them with negative feedbacks.

ok thanks for that. Just to be clear whilst my post was brief, in all my dealings I am nothing but kindly and gentle and never ever have threatened or implied bad feedback. My wording to the seller was nothing but sweet. Yes I politely and in the nicest possible terms asked for a full refund.
I have given the person the opportunity. sounds like it is a loss. lesson learnt. Not all people who write on here are angry or impolite, really people need to see that. people just want to know how others handle things.
I am not in the business of being angry or negative, if in doubt I will leave nothing and let it be. I don't want the bad vibes from anyone.

I bought a digital scale with a glass top and it came in just a plain paper large envelope with no padding and even too small in the large envelope to stop it slipping and sliding around. The postman just shoved it diagonally into my letter box, so it was half in and half out.
But it works perfectly and not one bit of damage. I couldn't believe it!
