So here is the latest 'SCAM' many Chinese sellers are now using in their listings to convince you to buy from them as their stock is supposedly located in Australia and you will get the goods quicker.
'AU STOCK' is big and bold in their listing heading.
In fact the item is in China and they use a re-fullfilment service called Equick.cn who consolidate many sellers parcels on a daily basis and ship them to Sydney. Equick then despatch them using Australia Post from their warehouse in Botany.
Around 4-5 days after you make your purchase you finally receive the tracking advice from Australia Post, which makes you think the items are in Australia, but in fact they have not even left China. Around 10-14 days later you finally receive the goods.
This activity is clearly misleading and a breach of eBay's 'misrepresenting item location' rules and needs to be stopped.

Yes - as you both say, amazon.com.au has been a bit like a blind date where a friend tells one that "He's very intelligent and good-looking, and he's interesting and with a great sense of humour and he loves opera and he's a tremendous gourmet and he's got lots of interests", and one agrees to meet him, only to find that he's four foot two, rodent-faced, obsessively plays chess to the point that he sets up the salt and pepper mills on the table to illustrate his favourite moves, once went to see The Phantom of the Opera (and thinks that that's opera), is clearly colour-blind if one judges by his puce and green attire, insists that the only good steak is a blue steak, and guffaws at his own utterances (thus illustrating a sense of humour).
In short - not as advertised, and hugely disappointing.

4 Chinese scam "Australian" locations - Is this against Ebay rules?
I would not buy if I knew it was not stocked in Australian. Therefore this is deception!
Ebay does not care or do anything.
Last time I had trouble with ebay I removed sales of over $1k profit to ebay from their listing.
Ebay did nothing and did not escalate to security team or follow-up my complaint.
gumtree!
3rd world call centre staff does not help.

Oddly specific example...
I've been watching how those with faith in the other site have been commenting on their lack of success so far, which has been interesting. In the beginning, it was all about how they were going to have instant success, blow all the competition out of the water, and be the death of eBay specifically. After all, both buyers and sellers have been waiting a long time for a good alternative, how could they not be immediately successful?
When it became clear they were not as successful as expected, it was because "Prime" hadn't been introduced yet, but once it was, then things would kick into gear... Still pretty lacklustre after being available for quite a while. I've tried Prime twice, and both times it was purely to access the streaming service so that I could watch something they have exlusively. (I'll sign back up for a month or so later in the year, when both American Gods S2, and Good Omens are available. )
Now articles tends to just talk about how Amazon is the sleeping giant who builds over time to become the dominant shopping site they always intended to be. There is some real basis to this - they tend to focus on infrastructure, market share and customer loyalty above pesky things like profit (i.e. they usually play the long game), and they are certainly still investing in some of those things, so it's not impossible for them to eventually be as massive as everyone originally expected, but they also have a lot of obstacles that are going to prove difficult to overcome.

Malaysia.
So, they are Asian and not registered in Australia. No point posting the seller's name - that will quickly disappear.
As always, the time to do your due diligence is BEFORE you buy.

Life saving things, not many.
However I required in item sooner rather than later because my client had a dedline. The Item was not available in any local or AU retail outlet, so Ebay was my only choice.
I could have ordered from Hong Kong at a cheaper rate, but the delivery time was too long. So, I ordered from an AU Stock supplier, thinking delivery would be the indicated 7-10 days or so. This was not the case.
Knowing this now, I would opt to order from overseas, as at least the delivery estimate is accurate. It does other AU stickists a disservice if some sellers are in fact not actually stocking in AU.
So if this Equick scenario is true, I would be dubious about buying anything being shipped from Botany if it is time sensitive.

Don't jump the gun.....there are several logistics companies in Botany who store and despatch goods for Chinese sellers.
You really cannot lump all sellers in the same basket if they state the items are in Botany.

I agree totally. Many if not most have good local stocking and distribution.
But as a buyer, is there a way of knowing if the item ordered is in fact in stock in the Botany warehouse for immediate delivery or, if it has to come from overseas and be redistributed at the time of the order.
I have ordered another bulk product lot for the same client and I am hoping that it is in stock locally but there is no way of actually knowing.

I don't know any way of finding out the stock levels of any particular seller. It is luck of the draw as far as I know.
