USPD & Import taxes

Hi, excuse my ignorance (which is why I'm here).

I've read all the posts I can about GSP & tax thresholds etc. The gist I get is that the "value" of the item is cost of item+cost of post/ transportation if it is couriered (eg GSP & Fed ex) BUT it is only the cost of item (value under $1000) if via normal post.

Is USPD Priority Mail international a courier? Or is it a "normal" mail where postage is not included & likely to get past customs without paperwork?

They are quoting about US$48 for a small piece of jewellery, & the cheapest option. This pushes me just over the A$1000.

Thanks for any advice given.

Thanks Harley.

It may be all theoretical at the momement anyway with the dollar "plunging". I've had a lovely time for the last few years buying books OS & other bits & pieces, but all good things come to an end :(s. Good for farmers & exporters though.

And hopefully Australian booksellers.

Customs will charge at least 10% on imported goods including shipping (no matter what way it comes) if it is over $1000 AUD. sadly, even $5 over will hit you hard. There's at least a $55 customs processing fee plus the actual import tax which is on the whole amount (not just the bit over $1,000). If you're buying through the Global shipping program, yes, Pitt Bow will charge you the amount required BUT you won't necessarily know what $$ until after you commit to buy (read the fine print, the amount showing is "a guide"). I avoid the global shipping program like the plague. I even ask sellers to relist and opt out of the program before I buy! Most sellers will oblige you I've found. I always try and buy under $1000 because of the extra cost, charges and delays with using the Global shipping program.
