Was I lucky? or did something else occur here?

Hi Guys,

when I put my max bid in for this item the bidding amount became my max bid - I won the item.

So does that mean that another bidders max bid was just 1 dollar below mine by chance?

That I by chance selected a bid 1 dollar more than theirs which forced the bidding amount up to my max bid immediately.

Here is the bid history:

I've won auctions by 1 cent, and yes, I thought it was pretty lucky.

Your bid was around 90 seconds after the underbidder, and it was all in the last two minutes of the auction, so it looks to me like they were trying to win it. They would have had no way of knowing if someone else was going to come in and place a bid, nor what they might have bid - they may well be kicking themselves right now for missing out by $1.

Look at the times. You put your bid in after the losing bidder. You were the last person to bid on that auction, so no one has tried to shill bid you.

At that price, I'm not sure if it would only go up by $1 but maybe it does. If it goes up by more, well yes you got lucky!

zen - at that stage it can increase by $1.00 as the under bidder may well have had $1514 as his max and the winner $1515 as his.

That's true and a good point. Even if the normal increment is (for example) $5, if your max bid is less than $5 higher but still higher than the last bidder, the price will only go up by whatever the difference is between your bid and theirs, whether 1c or $4.99.

Got it slightly wrong there. That only applies when you've already placed a bid. If the increment is $5 and you go to place a bid, you'll only be able to bid with that increment. Starting to sound confusing... 🙂
