What would you do? Should I persue this?

I'm confused and frustrated by a recent transaction. I've never left negative feedback before but I will be this time, my question is whether I can/should persue anything further, or just cut my losses.

I won an auction on the 8th and paid immediately. The item was $20 but advertised with $30 postage for 'express courier'. I asked the seller if he could just send it via auspost cheaper, and he said no, the postage cost is fixed. I accepted that, I figured he wanted the reassurance of tracking and a courier, and told myself It would be ok, because I'd get it nice and quick.

And then 5 days passed and it didn't get posted. I emailed asking what was up, and he said he was waiting for money to clear from paypal to his bank account before he sent it. Most sellers are capable of posting an item without making the buyer wait the clearing time between paypal and a bank. The money was sitting there, just not accessible to his ATM card yet. And he still expected me to pay more than the item was worth for 'express' postage? He said he would post on the 15th at the latest, a full week after purchase.

I told him I was unhappy being forced to pay for express shipping when his handling time was so long and asked what the point of express postage would be at this stage. He messaged back offering to post via auspost, and refund me the difference. Again, I accepted that as being fairly reasonable.

He said he would post by morning of the 15th. The afternoon of the 16th he finally actually posted the item, but never messaged me. I asked him what the refund would be, and he said 'Oh, it's not worth it, it was only a dollar, I sent it in two packages for a total of $29'.

What? WHAT? Can anyone explain the logic, because at this point I think he found the most expensive method possible just to spite me. Sending as two small packages will ALWAYS be far more expensive than one big one. It wasn't a small batch of items, but I would have estimated that it would fit perfectly fine into a $15 prepaid 5kg satchel, in fact I think it would have probably fit into a 3kg satchel, but I can't be sure.

On top of that, what sort of courier posts an item, express, for $1 more than auspost would charge. If that's true, I want in with this courier! And finally, who in their right mind goes to auspost, sees it will cost the same either way, and choose to still send it via auspost without express or tracking, instead of telling me they cost the same, and proceeding to use the superior tracked express service? I know I requested auspost, but I made clear that it was with the assumption that auspost would be considerably cheaper.

It's now friday afternoon, the 19th, and I still have no package. It'll be at least the 22nd before I receive it, a full 2 weeks minimum after postage. It's only coming from Adelaide to Brisbane, so I'm starting to wonder if it's even been posted at all, shipping should have only been a couple of days. I guess it could be still coming if he posted it after pickup on the 16th, that's only 2 postage days... I'm just skeptical now.

The only way I can possibly see him justifying $29 through auspost is that I severely underestimated the item, and he actually needed 2x5kg satchels. I doubt that, but I've held off doing anything until I receive the items to see how he's actually posted them. But a. you're telling me an item that is between 8kg and 10kg could be sent via express courier for $30? And b. I recently sent an 8kg package as one big box for only $20, maybe the postcode difference would take it to $30, but like I said, I can't see this lot of items being anywhere NEAR 8kg. He couldn't post it as one big box cheaper?

Can I do anything? Assuming I receive the item, the postage money is gone. Is there any financial consequence for being a spiteful jerk or taking over two weeks to get an item to the buyer? Am I overreacting, is it my fault for complaining about the supposed express shipping in the first place? What about the 8 day wait between purchase and shipping? The ad says estimated delivery 4-6 business days. I've never caused a fuss on ebay before but I feel like I should be able to do something this time!

Just to make it even more confusing, his feedback is 100%. It could be mostly buying, and very few selling transactions, but no one else seems to have an issue with him! That makes me worry that I'm being unreasonable. I'm 40 weeks pregnant and terribly hormonal, so that probably doesn't help. Any advice? I also seem to be scared of making him upset at me, part of me doesn't want to leave negative feedback, even though I know that's what it's there for and there's nothing he can do about it.

What would I do? Nothing at the moment.

Wait until you receive the item and see how it was shipped, how well it was packed and what date it was actually shipped, then consider what feedback and DSRs to leave.

If $30 was the advertised shipping cost then that is what you agreed to pay when you bid. If actual shipping was a lot less then you can always ask for a refund of the difference but there is nothing to force the seller to refund you.

Was the item breakable? It may not have been suitable for shipping in a satchel. Shipping costs can include all packaging materials used as well as actual postage and your seller may have had to buy suitable boxes.

If the seller wants to wait until PayPal funds have reached their back account prior to shipping then they should include enough days in their handling time. If your seller has 3 days handling time then buyers should expect items to be shipped by day 4 after payment.

There is really nothing you can do at the moment. Once you have received your parcels then leave appropriate feedback and DSRs. And Good Luck with the baby!

Personally, I would wait until the items arrived before anything else, particularly in regards to feedback. Until you know for sure how the items were sent and what the costs may have been, there's not a lot of point in thinking about all the possibilities etc.

That being said, unless the handling time in the listing was stated as a week, I wouldn't be overly happy about the time taken to post. I don't particularly care one way or another what the reason is for a 7 or so day handling time, I only care that that info is available on the listing.

The seller may have used a different service for postage - have they given you any tracking numbers? Most parcel services provide them except for the standard rates with own packaging (including normal boxes and padded bags).

If you have tracking numbers, you could at least check the AP website to see (hopefully) the current status of your parcels, and it also shows which service was used. If they uploaded the numbers to eBay, they will be located next to the item in your purchase history in My eBay.

Sorry to hear of your experience but I will just address some of your points.

With regards to the seller offering express courier. Unfortunately with eBay if a seller chooses courier eBay automatically displays it as express courier which is false and misleading but something which the seller has no control over. Sellers who offer courier have been complaining about this for a long time but eBay have not taken the steps to rectify this which is frustrating for both buyer and sellers.

The add saying 4 - 6 business days for delivery is wrong information provided by ebay. Depending on where it was sent from it can take a good 10 working days to arrive once posted  whether it be sent through Australia Post or via courier.

Some people just don't have the ready cash to be able to afford to pay for postage which maybe why the seller has had to wait for the payment to be transferred into their bank account. It is not good business practice but the seller is only a very casual seller and they may not have had sufficient funds to cover the postage costs. They also offer a 3 business day handling time on their listing but they did stretch it out to 6 days which is a bit long.

Until you receive the parcels you will not be able to judge what method the seller has used. It sounds like the seller may have used 2 x 5kg satchels which could have worked out cheaper than sending it as one parcel. Depending on where it is coming from and where it is going parcels which are sent via parcel post (ie not in prepaid satchels) can be horribly expensive.

The positive is that the seller has been communicating with you and keeping you informed so there is no reason at this stage to assume it isn't on it's way.

You could email the seller and ask if he has any tracking information for the parcels.

At this stage just think of you and the baby and don't let it upset you.

This situation has been caused by a combination of eBay providing incorrect information re couriers and the seller being tardy in posting the parcel but you will probably find it will all work out well in the end.

Good luck with the new baby.

As the others have said, wait until the item arrives and don't stress. Once you have it (or not!!!0 then you can make a relaxed and fully informed assessment.

Re the delay in Paypal clearance - did this go through as an echeque???? If yes - the seller was justified in waiting. If not (ie they were waiting for the money to transfer from paypal to their bank account) then they need a firm kick up the backside.

If they sent it as two 3kg satchels with tracking then the $29 sounds right.  They may have chosen to send by registered mail to protect themself against an item not received claim.  As previously advised, ask them for a tracking number if there is one.

About feedback, let the heat disappear from the transaction before leaving feedback of any kind.  If you choose to leave a negative then come back here and update us on the actual postage used and ask for some suggestions.  If you leave something like "overcharged for postage" as part of your feedback then they may be able to have it removed on the basis that they only charged the postage quoted in the listing.  You will need to be careful how you word your feedback.  Hitting their postage DSRs may be more effective.
