Ive noticed some of the online furniture auctions have all their bids as private listings , to me it looks like there is a loophole and they
are shill bidding , has anyone else noticed this and is there another explanation for it

All you can do is guess and report it too ebay
If they find any shill bidding going on they will take action on the members accounts.

Just because the listing is private doesn't mean it's being shilled. Once upon a time buyers purchases were not private, and some sellers have them marked private for .. privacy ..
I don't see the problem, if it goes over what you are prepared to pay stop bidding. No-one is forcing you to bid higher, the thrill in out bidding someone for the sake of it runs thin pretty quickly for most ebayers.

Private listings are really designed for sensitive or high-priced items, they are notoriously hard to spot shill-bidding on and a lot of buyers avoid those auctions for that reason, me included.
I cannot see any reason why a seller would have "private listings" on run-of-the-mill items, often when you look at their feedback warning signs will come up with excessive negs and retractions......................
