No -
Not only are you not covered for returns etc, once you have paid money into a bank account there is no guarantee the seller will send the item, so PLEASE - paypal only, do not allow the seller to give you any sob story about paypal not working etc etc.
If they insist on bank deposit, ask them to cancel the transaction and report them to eBay.
Can you put the item number here ? NOT the seller id, just the item number.

Under Consumer law (ACL) you probably are but would need to pursue compensation or remedy yourself.
By using paypal you probably have a better chance of compensation as the process is well documented and somewhat
automated.
Essentially it depends on what the item actually is, the terms of the contract and the business status of the seller.
Some items are specifically not covered by the PP buyer protection policy
ie vehicles

Hi mcmanus, Yes. As mentioned prior. It is the safest way. Think of it this way. The item may be Broken, so the seller says pay by Bank Deposit. You get the item and find out it's not working, but you have paid him by Bank Deposit. You then have to pursue him and that's a lot of work. Best you choose Paypal.

If they are a business and offer direct credit card payments then that is safe too but any seller who asks you to not use Paypal is unaware of ebay policy or is suspect, just pay by going through checkout with Payal unless it is a pick up item in which case do not use Paypal or bank deposit, you should tell them you will pay cash on pick up after inspection however if they did not offer that as a payment method you could be at the wrong end of an unpaid item dispute, better than losing money!
