return postage on item not as described/faulty

Hi all, one thing that really gets to me is the way sellers expect buyers of items to pay return postage when it is ''item not described'

or even  faulty. When the item has a few kilos to it, it can be quite a bit to return it. I dont see why a buyer should be out of pocket when it is not their fault, after all, it;s not just a change of mind etc, then I agree the buyer should wear it.

It is frustrating. Prepare yourself for some boring comparisons to shopping at KMart.

OK.

When I buy, I take into consideration the return shipping cost if something goes wrong.

I know that Paypal, and the bank on a chargeback, require that cost to be borne by the buyer.

As it is what it is, I look for sellers who, in their listings, state their returns policy.

Some sellers will cover the return cost if it is due to an error in the listing, or proves to be faulty.

If a seller states this, or, in the case of a problem, offers to cover it, I think, great...there was an issue, but the seller is taking responsibility here.

If I want to return something because of my oversight, i.e. change of mind, I expect to pay the shipping both ways, and to only be able to return if the seller accepts change of mind returns.

This I have never actually done (return for change of mind), but it is what I would do 🙂 I pay as my responsibility.

But..if the seller does not offer to refund the shipping for an item significantly not as described, or faulty, I make a note not to deal with them again. Because I consider that to be their mistake, they pay it, for preference.

I understand exactly where you are coming from.

I agree that when an item is faulty or if the wrong item has been sent, then the seller should cop the postage cost.

I suppose the difficulty is that paypal doesn't necessarily know if the buyer is being reasonable and fair in their interpretation of 'not as described".

I do know I faced exactly this situation last week when one glass in a pack of 6 arrived cracked. It was a catch of the day purchase and they have exactly the same policy, that they may ask you to return it at your expense.

BUT, they did have a facility to upload photos and describe the problem, then they decide within a week what has to be done.

In my case, they said I did not need to return them, to dispose of the broken glassware carefully and they would issue a credit into my account.

This was a good outcome for me in that I ended up with 5 glasses, but bad in another way as they were meant for a gift so i am back to square one on that as I can't give a broken set.

Maybe paypal could have something like that going, instead of a blanket rule that everything has to be returned before refund.

There are many sellers who, like me, offer a full refund including return postage if thre goods are faulty or not as described so pick your sellers more carefully.

When I am buying I always work out if it is going to be worth the cost of a return, feedback is your friend.

But descriptions can be subjective. Is your aqua, my blue or green? Is my 'good condition' your 'very ordinary condition?

Items that do not work, there is no argument about, but snad, is a minefield of misunderstandings.
