Personally I would look for an expert in your local city and ask for opinions rather than relying on eBay.

There may be some regular stamp members having some knowledge on this item reply here.

If the stamps are glued in you will not get a good price for the album.

I had an old stamp collection that had been started by my grandmother as a little girl and continued by my mother....from the late 1880s to 1995.   The stamps had all been carefully put in with stamp hinges and were in excellent condition.  My great grandmother had been the post mistress at a rural post office so the collection was very comprehensive with all Australian stamps being represented from the time the album was started.

I took the albums to the Coin and Stamp Fair with the view to getting the best price I could so I could invest in my passion....coins.

I was rather disappointed to end up with just $500, after a starting price of $150 from the first dealer I spoke to.   Apparently these days it is a no-no to use anything to hold the stamps in the album.....not even the stamp hinges that were recommended for many years.

If the owner of the album is a well known Australian you may get a better price by selling at auction with the emphasis on the owner rather than the stamps themselves.

Condition is everything when dealing with stamps. Just because the album is dated 1863 does not mean the stamps contained within are that old or indeed rare. Back in the 1800's many stamps were issued in their millions & were in circulation for many years & have very little value today. On the other hand all you need is just one rare stamp which could be worth $;000's.

Can you post a sample of some of the pages of stamps.

I would get opinions from people you can trust to get an idea of value. I have heard quite a few horrid stories of collections belonging to a collecter being sold off when they passed for a fraction of their true market value.

Naturally this would apply to an collectable not just stamps.

Maybe a specialised stamp auction house is the way to go.
