Aynsley advice please.

For a very long time I have owned a teacup and saucer which is a light creamy colour with extensive pattern in gold comprising of thick gold bands, very fine gold scrolling and raised gold dots. On the base it has the word Aynsley and under that in gold script the words, Civil Service, Sydney. I can't find any info. Can anyone help please.

Hi, I can't help with information but we would really, really like to have a photo of the cup and saucer and the marks on the base, please.

Wilma, thanks for your reply. I will photo tomorrow when light is better.  I bought it at an auction from the estate of a High Court Judge a long time ago and it has always fascinated me.

"The retail co-operative movement that started in
late-nineteenth century Britain also translated into
a similar movement in the colonies. In Sydney the
Civil Service Store was established in 1871 as a
response to the demands of an emerging middle
class requiring conservatively priced household
goods."

I have seen quite a few ceramic items with stamps indicating that they were retailed through the Civil Serrvice Store Sydney, notably Royal Doulton items. It can add to the interest of an Australiana collector. In much the same way you often see Shelley souvenir wares with stamps like "Made in England Expressly For Pickards Ltd Bowral" for example (usually a shop which sold souvenir wares of the area, often a Chemist.)

I just found that article, too

P9 mentions the Civil Service Store.

They had enough clout to have special backstamps made from bulk orders back to the 'home' country.

nothing to add really, but to say that like siddie says, Doulton did a lot of pieces for Civil Service Stores, and Thomas Webb in Melbourne

I have several pieces in our collection.

and speaking of our collections.... nearly finished unpacking, just the One Doulton Australiana cabinet to go and we will be HOME in our new unit..

I'd say about 80% of the collection fitted in, the rest will have to have a little holiday at the Storage Facility for now.

life here is almost back to normal (whatever that is with Vic's illness), he's deteriorated a lot this year, but still fighting it. Missed out going to the Maryborough Show as he was just not well enough for the 2hr drive. Moving house was a bigger job for me than I had imagined, I'm exhausted but happy in the new place.

It's a big change for you both Lyndel, sorry to hear Vic is not so good, but, he is a fighter, good on him.  I'm not surprised you like the smaller place, so much easier to live in and look after.
