bone is splitting on older ornament - can I halt it splitting further?

Hi there,

I have a small collection of older bone medicine holders from Lombok. They are stored in a cardboard box wrapped in a bit of tissue, but I looked at them tonight and one is splitting open down one side. Is there anything I can do to halt this or prevent it happening to the others? I thought maybe soakimg them in water or oiling them?? Any advice appreciated!

I'm no expert but not water. That will further dry them out.

I would also suggest the tissue n cardboard would be aiding in drying them out.

I have read an animal fat is helpful to slow down moisture loss in bone, something like lard.

The deterioration of bone, antler, ivory, and teeth is caused by extreme dryness; excess heat, which leads to destruction of the protein portion and loss of moisture, causing shrinkage and cracking of the surface; excess moisture, which leads to swelling of the protein portion and promotes mold growth; combination of excess heat and moisture, which destroys the ossein and can cause warping and cracking when the items dry out;

A consistent temperature and humidity are important for these materials. Generally a relative humidity level of not less than 30 percent in the winter and not more than 55 percent in the summer is best, with fluctuations of not more than 15 percent during each season. When possible to achieve, the optimum temperature is 68 F with fluctuations of no more than +/- 3 a day. Avoid storing and exhibiting items containing bone, antler, ivory, or teeth near radiators, heat pipes, outside windows, or incandescent lights, which can cause excessive drying and temperature fluctuations.

Wow, thank you kopenhagen, that's great information!

My guess is excess heat is the culprit (ducted heating). Might try the animal fat,  and I'll search the house for a cooler more stable temperature spot, away from the heating.
