Hi, I have this piece up for sale and it has dawned on me that is likely to be silky oak rather than blackwood. Can anyone give an opinion? Thanks.

tassie or aussie or silky oak (or stringybark , mountain ash etc.) i think. if it were blackwood there would be more colour etc.

You can see from the grain in the panel above the door that it is Quarter Sawn Oak.

Thanks for your comments. I don't understand what quarter sawn oak means. Is that still silky oak? It was by seeing the panel above the door particularly I started to realise it was oak and not blackwood. Is that the quarter sawn? thanks

It is not silky oak, it isn't English Oak either. Silky Oak is very distinctive. I just stood up from the computer and took a couple of photos of my wardrobe for you, unless you have this particular grain,it is not Silky Oak.

I think it is Tasmanian Blackwood see here http://tinyurl.com/tassie-blackwood

This is silky oak

its the same timber, just a different part of it. its 'fiddleback' tassie oak , look at this Ebay listing http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Fiddleback-Tasmanian-Oak-Chopping-board-/151018032270

In the photo that I have listed, if you use the zoom feature you can see the oak pattern in the panel above the mirror.

Thanks for the input of posters above. I've put a couple of question marks in my listing. Suggested it is tas oak on 'good authority' but the wood may be known by different names. I have disclaimed any suggestion of my expertise and suggested they have to be on the beauty of the wood rather than what we call it. I have appreciated your comments.

Bidding is going well on this with 35 mins to go.  This morning it only had 1 bid and now has 8! I hope you get a few more with deep pockets as it's a lovely piece of furniture. :-x
