"However, items lodged in mailboxes are clearly at risk because in most cases, the first scanning event doesn't occur until the item has reached the buyer's nearest distribution centre, and if it goes missing prior to that initial scanning event, Seller Protection doesn't exist and under their Buyer Protection conditions, Paypal will then reimburse the buyer from the seller's account."

Quite right, and that is why all my items are lodged at the PO counter, where I make sure any satchels are scanned.

"Having said that, I no longer sell but when I did, not once did I ever have an item go missing in transit, and as a buyer, I've only ever experienced a couple of INRs and in both cases, they were small items from Chinese sellers, one of which ultimately turned up some 2 months later."

INR disputes are going to become a larger issues for sellers, because from 20th Aug they will be counted as a defect in the Seller Performance Standards, even if the seller has refunded in full. In the last 12 months I have had 3 INR disputes - all were large letter, so no tracking available. 2 International, 1 interstate.  Of course I happily refunded in full, as I would have also done if the buyers had contacted me first, rather than opening an INR dispute. They were small values items, but I do think it is unfair that sellers should be penalised for postal service problems that are out of their control. IMO if the seller refunds in full it should not be counted as a Seller Defect.

I absolutely agree with you and believe that eBay really need to rethink their defect policy with regards to resolved INRs.

I should have also said this is why so many eBay sellers now use the on-line posting services like Click & Send, and eBay Print Postage Label. When generated they record the buyer's name and address and link to the tracking number, so they can be safely lodged in a posting box because the comply with PayPal's Seller Protection polcy for Australia. I prefer to support my local PO - and believe the walk to the Post Office does me good. Smiley Very Happy

As it so happens, my nearest mailbox is also at my local LPO so it would make little difference from my POV. You're right though, Click & Send complies with Paypal's requirements although I wouldn't use it for the simple fact that postage is charged to one's credit card, and at the usurous rates being charged by banks these days, I always make sure that I have a small positive balance in my credit card accounts, and if I need to use my credit card for any reason, I always transfer the necessary amount from my bank account first. My bank must really hate me, because I haven't had to pay so much as one cent of interest on either of my cards for several years now. ๐Ÿ™‚
