A Dongle Joke That Spiraled Way Out Of Control
In an age of blogs, tweets, Hacker News, Reddit and Anonymous, an off-the-cuff joke can spin wildly out of control.
At least it appears that’s what happened with PyCon this week when a sexual joke led to some very public firings, a virulent debate about women in technology, another virulent debate about public shaming, and now, a DDOS attack.
So here’s what happened:

This is why we should not publicly shame anyone like she did..
I don't think she thought it through...
anyway... don't we all joke about a dongle????

No, we don't always joke about dongles.
Did Adria claim to have taken the pic and tweeted it because it was while a young woman was on stage at the time?
There were so many stories about this last week I can't recall whether it was this incident or not.

I didn't say we always joke I said don't we all??
and yes it is a generalised comment.. I am sure not 100% of us have laughed at a dongle joke... but I know plenty that have...
Was there a reason to publicly humiliate this man?
He made a silly joke.. did he say it was directed at the woman on stage?
I have no idea.. I have only just read the article and a few connected links...

I think his response is dignified and makes a lot of sense.
It seems pretty heavy-handed that a man with 3 kids to support
loses his job over that.
I don't know the full story and didn't read all the links so maybe there's more
to this than I picked up.

You're right. It is an amazing case of what can get out of hand entirely and cost people their jobs.
