A very snakey Christmas

You are so right Marwi, she was very much mistaken.  I don't know a lot about snakes (although I don't dislike them, I admire their lovely patterns) but I did know that most snakes are poisonous in Australia and to be careful around them so there was no way I was going to walk right past that one in case it bit me ... I was a long way from home .. Smiley Very Happy

A very snakey Christmas

A coastal taipan killed a man in Qld about 18 months ago. It was in his house and bit him on the bare foot. He died about 36 hours later in hospital. About 2 years ago a power worker was checking power poles in outback Qld when he was bitten by an inland taipan. He had no chance. They say he was probably dead within 30 minutes or so after the bite.

"The maximum yield recorded from a single bite of Inland Taipan is 110 mg and the venom is so toxic that just one bite is enough to kill at least 100 human adults or 250 thousand mice.

Depending on several factors a bite if left untreated as the potential to kill someone in as little as 30 to 45 minutes. Its venom is about 50 times more toxic that the king cobra venom."

...250 thousand mice.

1.  catch mouse

2.  find a vein

2. inject appropriate dosage

4. Repeat x 250,000

Seems to be no concensus on which snake is the deadliest.
Black Taipan isn't even on the list but they kill a lot of people.
Unfortunately for the people of Papua New Guinea is that they don't have any antivenine for the Black Taipan

Very interesting information marwi, thank you.

I can't believe how much venom some of these snakes carry given that they only need enough to kill/stun prey.  It's just amazing that they can be so lethal considering their size.
