"crown of thorns"......
Senior Liberals have described plans for a possible deficit tax in the budget as "electoral suicide". Some talked of a party-room revolt and one warned the Prime Minister Tony Abbott would wear the broken promise as "a crown of thorns" if the government decided to go through with it.

from the same SMH... just couldn't help myself
One Liberal MP said he woke on Tuesday morning to the news of the tax.
"It's just shock," the MP said. "There was no communication from the leader's office. We're all just scratching our heads. It's the biggest **Bleep** up we've had in a long time."
"I can't say anything on the record because it's just too stupid," he said. "If it's wrong, then it's **Bleep**, because why would you scare the electorate? And if it's right, then it's even worse because we said before the election there'd be no new taxes."
Another branded Mr Abbott's attempts to recategorise the tax as a levy as "sophistry", calling it "an offence to voters" that was "worse than Gillard's claim that the carbon tax was not a tax".

And get used to it. Every 'temporary', or "one off" levy introduced in SA by our state labor Govt is still here, and here to stay.

The flood levy was temporary... and look what the now PM thought of it.

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has sent an email encouraging people to donate money to the Liberal Party's campaign against the Government's proposed flood levy.
The Government plans to introduce the one-off levy for people earning more than $50,000 a year to help pay for the flood recovery. Flood victims and low-income earners will be exempt from the levy.

Wow! You would think it would've been discussed in the party room as everyone there was elected , it's not supposed to be one man's mandate lol
For me this issue isn't even about the tax but about the following:
1. The hypocrisy of what he/they did to Gillard. Bullying and schoolyard taunts of "JuLIAR" taken right up to the day before the election.
2. The fact that they lambasted Rudd for being an autocratic leader. Didn't he get elected on a platform of honesty and transparency? Well if he can't be transaparent with his own colleagues, then the people have no hope.
3. The psychological word plays this government indulges is like calling this a "Deficit" tax in order to fool a gullible public into thinking it really isn't THEIR decision and that the blame lies elsewhere.
4. That not one Liberal supporters has weighed in on this. Instead they hark back to to what Labor did rather than discuss what this government is doing. At least labor supporters are decent enough to be vocal about issues they aren't happy with in their own government - Obeid and asylum seekers.
5. That he can be so stereotyical is scary. Dump on pensioners. Dump on the middle classes. But help out rich working women and m/billionaires.
