Tony Abbott enters this leadership crisis in a stronger position than those who would replace him for one simple reason: he has a plan to hold his job and they don't have a plan to snatch it. Not yet, anyway.
Malcolm Turnbull is the most viable candidate standing in the wings. The polls say it and the colleagues know it. But he isn't campaigning, not actively anyway.
Julie Bishop is the other option, but also the bigger risk, and she isn't campaigning either. She said so on Tuesday.
Abbott, on the other hand, is campaigning. He has already played his key card, claiming he has legitimacy of the people's vote just 17 months ago, warning that he will have to be blasted out and reminding colleagues that disunity is death, whoever is in charge. It's a potent message.
He's not a Lawyer and he's not an accountant. He's a Firefighter and a Lifesaver.

ABC
Yeah trust the ABC to stir the pot.
Are you suggesting that the media should not be trying to find out what is going on in our government? !!!! That i their job, we have the right to know.
I might suggest that icy read this but she probably won't, its a good read super_nova http://www.newpolitics.com.au/tony-abbott-bad-prime-minister
I read it about half-way through and decided it's actually just another opinion piece, Donna, the likes of which are breezily dismissed as unsubstantial whenever I post similar.
I think you (we) all need to get past this stupid Rudd/Gillard vs Abbott feud and realise that the Australian economy is in serious trouble when we have to borrow $110mil a day just to pay the interest on our debt.
Labor has labelled the government’s spending cuts as “unfair”. However, Mr Fraser’s presentation to Cabinet showed the government was now borrowing almost $110 million a day to pay its bills due to interest payments on debt and the growing Budget deficit, which the Coalition inherited from the previous Labor government."
No leader of any party is going to be popular when they propose cost-cutting measures to try and reduces public spending, especially when the key areas of spending blow-out are welfare and healthcare.
If you think Mr Abbott needs to go, ask yourself who of those baying for his blood want to accept the poisoned chalice.
It's a tough job and Tony Abbott has taken it on. I have yet to see any one of the chihuahuas snapping at his heels that could be even considered any better suited for the job.

yes the economy is in a bit of trouble becausethe govt have done nothing but talk it down. People have stopped spending because they are worried about what's going to happen next, with all the cuts aimed at the general population and possibly increased costs in health and education.
People stop spending business stop growing and hiring and start firing. it s a vicious circle that's been started.
how do you expect we "get over" the Rudd/gillard thing when abbott and his ministers are using it every day in an attempt to hold on to their seats ?
it's a tough job alright, have you forgotten what abbott and his media mates put gillard through, her hair, her clothes, her body, her partner. they used everything they possibly could. No I won't forget what they did

I'm not suggesting anything. I'm stating that the ABC, not content with just reporting the news, is now trying to create the news (ref the above snippet posted by Am*3).
What on earth are you suggesting? That media outlets only publish official statements made by PM or MPs.??
Of course media outlets are going to do their own enquiries/investigations into any matter they want to.
They not 'creating news' they are delving into news in more detail. The above information is accurately reported.
Apart from thst why single out the ABC, all the msm in Aust are reporting the same things from their own communications with LNP MPs and backbenchers.
Try The Daily Telegraph if you want to see sensationalised tripe.

The nuts and bolts of how a Libspill would work
Where would a leadership vote happen?
In a Liberal party room meeting.
How does a meeting get organised?
They usually happen every Tuesday morning in a sitting week. Officially they are scheduled by the Prime Minister's Office. The next one is due on February 10.
How could leadership come up?
An MP could move a spill motion from the floor. If it is seconded, then it would go to a vote.
Chief government whip Philip Ruddock would run the ballot.
If it is successful, this would pave the way for subsequent voting for the leadership.
Who gets to vote?
The Liberal Party has 102 MPs in the House of Representatives and the Senate, which means 52 votes are needed for a majority.
The 102 includes 17 Queensland Liberal National MPs. There are six other LNP MPs who are not included, because they caucus with the National Party.

Yes, I think that attitude is rubbing off on supporters. " Don't you dare publish anything negative about our PM ( our, cough, glorious leader!)"
