Because that is what I am, I would really love to see everyone have an equal share in this country's wealth.

When you think of big business and what they make remember that any business is only as good as it's workers are they treated as well as they could be by big business.

Maybe that is why the poor remain poor?

You are free to believe and express those beliefs (something you would not be able to do under the system you believe in)

You are saying that what was in Poland and other eastern block countries  could be described as socialism.  In fact that was just a totalitarian system with nationalised everything & centralised control.  It failed because when the revolution happened the people who knew how to run the industry were sent to jail, to work in uranium mines, or shot,  and people who knew nothing were left in charge.  No society can have all people regardless of education and responsibility earning exactly the same, and it certainly was not the case in the so called socialist countries.  But what we have now in western countries where some people earn many millions a year while the employees who actually do the work are struggling to pay their mortgage and support their kids.  The difference between the lowest incomes and the highest wages is growing.  Which is especially worrying considering that the CEO gets his multi million dollars bonus even if the company is losing money and sacking workers.

As pointed out above, such things as guaranteed minimum wages, pensions, sickness benefits, free or heavily subsidised health care etc. are the goals of  true socialism.  Socialism should not mean lack of personal freedom or imprisonment of people who dared to criticise the system.  And obviously, highly qualified worker should be paid more than someone without qualification.

Anyone see something wrong with that? - Being an Agnostic  - your personal choice.  My opinion is irrelevant.

Socialism - yes, plenty.  I could explain why it doesn't work, if you like (will be back after dinner)

everytime I see something like leans to the left/right etc, makes me think they're talking about if a man dresses to the left/right.

The basic problem with socialism, Margo, was summed up by Mary Gilmore in her poem Nationality.

All men at God’s round table sit,
And all men must be fed;
But this loaf in my hand,
This loaf is my son’s bread.

Human nature being what it is, those who have are simply not willing enough to share with those who don't have,

I remember my father commenting once many years ago that with the growth of technology, the working week would be greatly reduced and people would have to find consrructive ways to fill in all  all their extra leasure time.

How wrong he was.

Can't see anything wrong with that Margo....

I believe whether, at the moment, you lean to the left or the right re your political bent and prefer communal traits over

capitalistic gain..every Australian could take a leaf out of "The little diggers" Billy Hughes' book... and

"follow your conscience"

Can anybody imagine a present day politician, let alone a former Prime Minister being elected as an MP for 58 years straight,...... never losing an election.....

and swinging as per political persausion more times than "Bob, Carol. Ted and Alice"???

Can you imagine a "modern" Prime Minister that stayed in Parliament until his death and continued to serve his

constituents for 30 odd years after his Prime Ministership was torn from him?

"At the 50th jubilee dinner of the Commonwealth Parliament, a speaker paid tribute to him as a man "who sat in every Parliament since Federation – and every party too". Arthur Fadden interjected: "Not the Country Party!" "No," said Hughes, still able to hear when he wanted, "I had to draw the line somewhere.",

Potentially due to the fact it was the Country Party who was responsible for bringing his Prime Ministership down in 1923.

He remained a member of Parliament until his death in October 1952, sparking a Bradfield by-election.

He had been a member of the House of Representatives for 51 years and seven months. Including his service in the

New South Wales colonial Parliament pre1901,

Hughes had spent a total of 58 years as an MP, and had never lost an election.

His period of service remains a record in Australia. He was the last member of the original Australian Parliament elected in 1901 still serving in Parliament when he died."

At the age of 90 years, one month and three days, Hughes was the oldest person ever to have been a member of the Australian parliament.

All very fine sentiment ...............in theory...... but as you are probably aware not everyone is prepared to put in the same amount of effort . As you are no doubt aware there are those types who just think the world owes them a living and just want to sit on their butt and have everything handed to them on a silver platter because they think it is their right to be provided for.

And Margo those types are in the majority.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

My objection would be those who make a lifestyle choice to stay on the dole and then complain loudly that it isn't enough to sustain them, they are out there, I know a few. If your idea of socialism is that everyone able to work does so then I'm for a fair days wage for a fair days work.

Margo, at what level of equality would you like to see everyone at?

At what level of effort would a personj qualify to be at that level of equality that you would set?

would your equality cater for those who drank, smoked, gambled as opposed to those that did not?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Would everyone in your new equal society dress exactly the same ?

How would you cater for those who ate more than the other equal person?

Would there be varying levels of equality, would that not defeat the concept of equality?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
