And now for something completely different....

Pythonism ! Well we already have Darwinism, now we have Pythonism.

Today (Monday) is the ' The Great British Cigarette Debacle'. It's the day when, by law, all cigarettes in places where these are sold, must be hidden behind closed doors. (These doors have been in situ in supermarkets for some time, but not always closed). No longer will you be able to see these displayed, since the reason behind this is because (apparently) kids find the packets attractive. How they arrive at this theory, is beyond me. I personally, have never found a ciggie packet particularly aesthetic, in fact I've always thought they were all rather bland and uninteresting. And they're certainly not very nice now, with images of blocked arteries and rotting teeth. I don't ever recall seeing a pack with a picture of a 'celebrity' or sportsman, a cartoon character or an Avatar, a nice psychedelic or floral pattern on them. Still, the teenagers find them appealing so it seems.

From today you are not allowed to ask a shopkeeper which are the cheapest brand, because they are not meant to tell you. Some shop owners know which brand of smokes a particular customer buys, and will automatically take them from the shelf without them asking for them. Well not any longer. If they do so, they are breaking the law. They have also been issued with minute price stickers to place over the existing ones. This is because customers are not permitted to actually see the prices, only the person serving them. At the bottom of the sliding doors there is a strip of metal. This is designed to prevent toddlers from looking up and viewing the contents. (Assuming the sprogs can manage to get behind the counter in the first place, of course).

The next salute is that they are thinking of making all cigarette packets plain, which sort of makes all of the above a tad silly. Honestly, you couldn't make it up. And I haven't. This was told to me by the manageress of my local 'Supernews'. Now you may think this was all an edict by the Health & Safety nannies. Not so. It was issued by Comedy Dave and his band of Crackpots.

When you think that a teenager could walk into any supermarket, remove a bottle of Vodka from the shelf, and neck it on the spot if the mood takes them, it makes all of this nonsense above even more ridiculous. Truly, the world has gone bonkers.

Be interested to know if you people in Oz have these doors in front of cigarette displays, or is it just Barmy Britain ?

Maybe you did not but somebody did, and no doubt some people are silly enough to fall for it.  Yes, there are new tougher rules coming to GB, they are pretty much in line what we have here =

  • Cigarettes will be sold in plain packets bearing shock health warnings

It's been about 5 years since "behind closed doors" became the law here in Australia.

Plain packaging (olive colour) but you're not allowed to call it olive due to the Olive Industry obsessing about the association with a killer.    And it's hardly plain packaging due to the warnings and pictures of gangrene, mouth cancer, prem. babies, etc.

I'm not positive but I think smoking is banned on currently made TV shows, movies etc.

....anyhow*

New Zealand they have the cigs in a cupboard but not plain packaging yet.

The New Zealand government wants to ban all Cigs by 2025.

You can grow your own Tobacco here but not sell it.

If Cigs are banned Tobacco will be worth more then Pot.

Little old Ladies and men will be buying it in alleys 🙂

Research, ever heard of it?

I hope GB's rates take a dive like ours have as a result of these regulations.  Australia was first in the world with some of them, and it has worked well.

Thats great imo Lionrose.  I didn't know that about NZ.  Australia should follow that lead.  I think the best thing the govt could do is ban the sale of cigarettes but allow people to grow their own if they choose to smoke.  Keep all the public places smoke free as they already are anyway and let people have a couple of plants.  It is just a plant fgs.  But oh no if you let the people grow their own they might end up saving some money from all the cigs they dont have to spend $5,000 a packet for anymore. We wont be having any of that...

Are you suggesting that researchers make up their figures?

If so, are you suggesting that all the figures (about other matters) that I presented to my bosses after lots of work were lies?  They were not.

I don't want to see them, certainly do not want to smell them, don't want to know they exist. But they are everywhere where I live. From people smoking in front of stores I want to go into, by my car in a parking lot when I try to leave, even my doctors office reaks of it when i go for a checkup. Everywhere I look on the ground, there are butts littering the parking lost, sidewalks, walkways, some still with smoke coming from them because whoever dropped it couldn't be bothered with first putting it out.

Worse, is when smokers think they can smoke half a cigerette, put it out and save the rest for later, thinking that it won't bother anyone. At the shelter they might as well just let the women smoke, they allow cigerettes in the dorms, half smoked, out in the open, even rolling the nasty tobacco making them, right there in one's bed 3 feet away from my bed. But will not allow food, not even in sealed containers in the dorms.

They scan for food, let the cigerettes go on through, and the table where I have to place my personal items is so dirty with nasty half smoked cigerettes, I ask them to clean off the table first and they refuse, saying that if i want to get in, i have to put my belongings there where the cigerettes are.

rant over
