Students lose right to free laptop as Federal Government scraps Digital Education Revolution

In the 2007 election Howard offered a tax refund when you bought your child a new laptop for school... Rudd countered that offer and said he would give each child a free laptop....

Rudd also said he will give you a supplement to help you pay for school costs instead of the tax refund that Howard was giving when you spent money upfront on your own child. 

Now we will lose both of those policies... 

I hope they do go back to the education tax refund when you spend your own money but I doubt that will happen...

If you look for it, I am sure you will find that the students were never promised a free laptop of their own.... as I recall (and I don't care enough to find proof) he said every student would have access to a computer at school, didn't he?

One Laptop Per Child Australia Project

One Laptop Per Child Australia Project helps children who live in remote communities by providing them with purpose-built, high quality XO laptops, and educational software.

This project is part of the Australian Government's closing the gap initiative in education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who are represented strongly in remote communities.

The project aims to give out 500,000 laptops to primary school aged children by 2020.

National Secondary School Computer Fund

The National Secondary School Computer Fund (the Computer Fund) is helping schools to provide access to new ICT equipment for secondary students in Years 9 to 12.

The Computer Fund has achieved a one computer per student (1:1 ratio) for students in Years 9 to 12. More than 967,000 computers have been installed under the Computer Fund.

The Computer Fund is assisting secondary schools in the government, Catholic and Independent sectors, regardless of location. Depending on their need, schools can buy desktop computers, netbooks, laptops, tablets or a mix of these. Funding is also available for specialised equipment for students with disability.

Will students be allowed to take a laptop home?

Whether students are allowed to take laptops home is at the discretion of the individual school. This decision will need to be made within the requirements of their education jurisdiction.

So, no free computer for each child, just the use of a computer.

A scheme that was intended to last 4 years ends in June when the 4 years is up. Not a broken promise.

our school desperately needs the school hall upgraded but it didnt get to spend the money on doing that.

It had to spend the money on getting a lift put in in the two story building. A lift that is never used

DDB - the $3 million was specifically for either a MPC or Library. The funds could not be redirected for any other purpose.

Maybe ask the principal or business manager of the school if they applied for the $3 mill, or filled in the paperwork correctly so that it was approved.
