Just curious about what you do if you have scanned all of the customers items and then they say "oh hold on a minute, I forgot something" and rush off to get said item. Can you and do you suspend thier transaction? Or do you have to wait until they return while a line forms behind them?

Going by my experience being in line behind this kind of buyer, some operators suspend and put through the next customer and some wait for the customer to return with the extra item/s.
Not sure if it depends on how experienced they are with the register. Would be interesting to hear from an operator as to what the store policy is.

Thanks for the reply julie.
I am a checkout chook in a small country town supermarket. Our policy is either we wait for them to come back or get a supervisor to suspend the transaction (which isn't always easy as the supervisor is usually serving customers too)

Must be hard happyroo if they do it during a busy time, especially if they take a while to come back.

My son used to work at Coles. He used to get frustrated (though never showed it!) because the checkout staff had to time each transaction so their performance could be monitored. A customer stepping away for a couple of minutes to get something else really messed up their averages.

Coles actually encourage this sort of behaviour from their customers. Currently they're offering a $10 voucher to their Flybuys members who spend over, say, $120 (varies between members).
It can be hard to keep an accurate running total in your head as you shop. If someone racks up $115 at the register they're likely to ask if the can grab another item to make up the difference.

Very frustrating like cezm said. If I forget something, I just complete the transaction and grab the forgotten item another time.
