Anyone been to Tokyo, Japan?

Hi my daughter is going to Tokyo in a few weeks time.  She is going with a friend and its the first time she is leaving me and going overseas.  Has anyone else been there and did you feel safe and do people speak English there?

I have to agree with the poster who lives in Tokyo. I worked and lived in Bangkok for nine years and it has a reputation for being a bit of a wild city.

I never once felt fearful for my personal safety and felt safer there than I do here,

Oh good. Thanks for letting us know. My niece came home for a week recently but she's gone back now. She must stand out like a sore thumb over there with her red hair, but she loves living in Japan & has done since she turned 18. She's now 24.

I hope your daughter took some woollies lol

I had a stopover in Osaka. Was so clean, tidy, no rubbish, no graffiti. All people were clean, tidy, neatly dressed, did not see any unkempt fat slobs.

Everyone very polite.

Its good that your daughter is having a good time.

Tell her she can buy heatpacks to wear on her body (-shoulders for example) to keep warm. They are sold at Chemists, Supermarkets, 100 yen stores in packs and they are cheap and everyone seems to wear them to keep extra cosy. You kind of rub them together and they generate heat for hours- we used to use them when we went camping/ in Winter or hiking in the snow.

Also, food is cheap and very fresh at 7-11 (and they really are everywhere) Doutour is good for coffee, and MOS burger is a japanese chain, bit pricey, but delicious. The basement floor of Department stores are excellent for food- particularly for dinner, then she can take it to her hotel to eat. Most cafes and restaurants have a 'set' menu for lunchtime, and its the cheapest way to eat a variety of food.

if she has any Qs, you can ask me via here if you like, Im happy to help. Robot Happy

Just letting you know my daughter got back this morning.  She LOVED Japan, never felt in danger.  The men are very respectful to them and helped them find places.  She is definately going back for another holiday but i think she is looking at China and Taiwan as well next year.  Thanks everyone for your help
