Asylum seeker 'groped boys'

Really???

I find this very concerning....  not a good look for those good people that have come here in great need and do follow our laws...

What can we do to help prevent this situation....  these asylum seekers have already arrived.... they are here... how do we educate them and ensure they will follow our laws and our way of life...

An Afghan asylum seeker living in the community while awaiting deportation is facing child sex charges after he allegedly indecently assaulted two boys at a public swimming pool in Seville Grove.

Armadale detectives allege Ali Khan Ibrahimi groped the boys, aged 11 and 14, in a pool at Armadale Aquatic Centre on a Sunday afternoon in January. The boys reported the incident to a lifeguard and centre staff notified police.

Mr Ibrahimi, a father of three young children, arrived on Christmas Island by boat last year. The Immigration Department had refused him a protection visa, despite his fears of persecution by the Taliban, but he had been allowed to live in the community while waiting to be sent home.

He is now in an immigration detention centre and will face court next month on a charge of indecent dealing with a child under 13 and indecent dealing with a child over 13 and under 16.

The allegations come weeks after shadow immigration minister Scott Morrison claimed asylum-seeker boat arrivals were given a "light touch" security assessment before being released into the community, after a Sri Lankan man on a bridging visa allegedly indecently assaulted a Sydney student last month.

Mr Ibrahimi, who spoke to _The West Australian _about his fight to stay in Australia before the allegations emerged, was among 88 asylum seekers rescued by the navy in February last year when their people-smuggling boat split in two.

Like Mr Ibrahimi, most aboard were Hazara, fleeing the persecution of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The 38-year-old was shot in the stomach and leg and his father and two uncles were killed by the Taliban in 2001 when his family fled their village after refusing orders to join the jihad and fight against their own people.

Mr Ibrahimi spent several years living illegally in Pakistan under what he claims was constant threat to his life, before desperation led him to pay people smugglers.

The Australian Government said in its refusal of Mr Ibrahimi's refugee application in August that it accepted his story but "given the passage of time since the incident occurring and the Taliban . . . not actively targeting Hazara Shi'as (as) they were during their rule in Afghanistan", they could "not be satisfied that he would be targeted upon his return on account of his race and religion".

I don't know why I even bother to try and have a conversation on this forum anymore... some of you just go for a personal attack...

If you want to discuss what to do with offenders born and bred in this country then go to the top of the page and start a new topic....

I apologise for my input, it just didn't seem right to single out this guy when asylum seekers in general are good and perhaps better citizens in some respects.

go back to the OP and you will see in the first sentence I said not a good look for the good people seeking asylum...

I singled out the guy because of the charges and the fact he is awaiting to be sent back.... who else would I single out??? He is the accused...

There can be bad eggs in any group of people cat.:-(

As someone else mentioned, it's not as if we can screen anyone for this type of thing.

The only thing that can be done is what we are doing - subject them to our criminal law system and provide them the same judicial penalties.

In this case, he was likely to be going back home anyway. Now he simply doesn't get his asylum status hearing.

I did actually see that, just didn't understand why you chose to single out a weirdo simply because he happened to be an asylum seeker. I thought it was a political thread.

Yes, there are a great many people who 'grope' and sexually abuse boys, and girls also.

Not asylum seekers either.

But Aussies.

Priests.

Teachers.

Fathers.

Mothers.

This particular person was an asylum seeker yes, but would you start a thread about other child abuse cases and title them: "Australian man gropes boy"?

Aussie schoolteacher gropes boy?

I must have missed those particular posts if you have. Surely you wouldn't just be targeting and highlighting asylum seekers to prove a political point would you?

To be fair to the OP I suspect her thread title was a direct copy from the news headline attached to the article she reposted.

I don't agree that we should be undertaking special education programs for asylum seekers to help them understand our laws...that is the responsibilty of every person living in or visiting a country. Ignorance of the law is not a defence as we have seen with many Aussies overseas.....

I wonder if it was a ploy to get thrown in jail instead of deported

That crossed my mind as well......I don't understand why they don't just deport him...why waste the money a court case will cost??? Surely for this type of crime he will not be granted asylum?
