Aussie Couples Keep Secret Cash Stash, Partners Unaware

Nearly 300,000 Australian couples have a secret stash or bank account that their partner does not know about, a new research claims

A financial behaviour survey by TAL Life insurance found that almost one in two couples, that’s a staggering 45 per cent, have one partner with an account that their partner knows about but cannot gain access to.

Three per cent of Australian couples have a totally secret account, with an average amount of $30,000.

Men’s secret stash was bigger with anywhere between $30,000 and $37,700, while women kept $22,300 in theirs.

I think it's good for a woman to have a secret nest egg in case a marriage or relationship becomes abusive or the partner/husband becomes unsupportive.

I tried for the final two years of my first marriage to secretly stash escape money, as soon as he found out, it was gone. I tried a bank account...he intercepted a bank statement and I was forced to withdraw the money to cover us for Christmas when the income account mysteriously got emptied in between him leaving work and coming home an hour and a half late from work. The ATM withdrawals were made at a local pub. I also tried hiding cash in the house, came home several times to my wardrobe a mess and all the kitchen and hall cupboards disorganised. In the end I had to rely on the help of a women's refuge. I also asked my employer to hold onto my final pay until I could get into town and withdraw the money within 15 minutes of it being deposited into my account.

I don't have a secret account now, nor do I hide money. I truly feel I have no need to. Should this change in the future...of course I would do it again.

I had a secret stash of cash before I told my ex it was over, prev experience was him leaving me with a lot of bills that took ages to pay off!

I had about $2000 then I just couldn't tolerate his mistreatment of myself & my kids and I called it quits for the last time! He then squatted on my sofa for the next 10 weeks refusing to leave or accept the marriage was over .....

Stretched the money out and no bills stress!

17 months now! Kids & I live in a calm & happy home!

Right on Carl, I can't see why both people in a marriage should not have a separate account of their own.  In fact I think a lot of people do, and then they have a 'household' account.

that each person has money of their own also means they can spend it as they see fit, if and when they want to, including presents for the other one, or a holiday or whatever, even for a quick escape if necessary.

Maybe if everyone decided that there should be some independence from their partner, there would be less breakdowns and divorces because each would know the other could, if they chose, walk away.

Think about it, it keeps both people trying harder within the marriage and that can't be a bad thing  Smiley Happy

We had separate bank accounts but hubby kept losing his card, so we just have the one transaction account, a savings account and a bills account. We have the one netbank account which we both have access to and can see where money is coming and going. It is a truly blessed feeling to KNOW the account balance is not going to change without expecting it. Hubby tells me every cent that gets spent and I do the same.

And having though about it for a few days now...If it ever came to the point of thinking of leaving him, a  secret account would be farthest from my mind. I wouldn't let it get that far. I made the mistake of staying far to long last time, it won't ever happen again.
