Australia Hit Hardest With Climate Change

Australia’s surface air temperature has already increased 0.9C since 1910, with the number of extreme heat records outnumbering extreme cool records nearly three to one since 2001.

Australia experienced its third-warmest year on record in 2014, with 2013 its warmest year on record. The heat experienced in 2013 was “unlikely” to have been caused by natural variability alone, the report stated, with such temperatures now five times more likely due to humans releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Other findings of the wide-ranging analysis, the first such Australian climate projection made since 2007, included:

  • The interior of Australia is set to warm more rapidly than coastal areas. Alice Springs will experience an average of 83 days a year over 40C in 2090, up from just 17 in 1995.
  • Melbourne will swelter through an average of 24 days above 35C by 2090, up from 11 in 1995. Sydney will experience 11 days above 35C by 2090, an increase from three days in 1995.
  • Australia is on course for a sea level rise of 45cm to 82cm by 2090, if emissions are not curbed. The report warned that if the Antarctic ice sheet was to collapse, sea levels would be a further “several tenths of a metre higher by late in the century”.
  • Extreme rainfall events will increase but overall rainfall is expected to drop in southern Australia, apart from Tasmania, during the winter and spring months – by as much as 69% by 2090.
  • There will be more extreme droughts, with the length of droughts increasing by between 5% and 20%, depending on how quickly greenhouse gases are cut.
  • Rising temperatures will result in a “greater number of days with severe fire danger”. Meanwhile, soil moisture will fall by up to 15% in southern Australia in the winter months by 2090.
  • Snow cover will decline, with the report stating there was “high confidence that as warming progresses there will be very substantial decreases in snowfall, increase in melt and thus reduced snow cover”.

Kevin Hennessy, a principal research scientist at the CSIRO, said it and the Bureau of Meteorology now had a greater confidence than ever in their forecasts of Australia’s climate.

“We expect land areas to warm faster than ocean areas, and polar regions faster than the tropics,” Hennessy told Guardian Australia.

Given Australia’s geographical position, that would mean much of the country was expected to warm faster than the global average.

“Australia will warm faster than the rest of the world,” Hennessy said. “Warming of 4C to 5C would have a very significant effect: there would be increases in extremely high temperatures, much less snow, more intense rainfall, more fires and rapid sea level rises.”

What with rampaging deforestation, chemical run off and industrial emissions and pollutant, I have every reason to believe it. Especially with the freak storms and extreme heat we've been experiencing over the last decade or so.

There is at least one place on the earth with a population of 11.5 million who go through a temperature swing of over 70 degrees on a regular cycle and what do you know the population is increasing  between 2009 and 2010 the increase was 1 million

It is an annual cycle by the way.

A swing of over 70 degrees and an increase , makes the predictions look sort of silly when it is claimed the a 2 degree increase will have a devastating affect

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Medford, Oregon has an average temperature swing of over 60 degrees F......but I find an increase of 10% in one year at your locale  a little hard to swallow.

You don't have to worry. The earth has existed for millions of years we've gone from freezing to heatwave and back to freezing century after century, it's just a normal cycle. Worrying about the weather is pointless because it's going to get cold then hot again then cold and back to hot over and over again.

Besides, scientists are discovering hundreds of new planets every week thanks to new technology. SETI is scanning the skies for digital signals from other planets. It is just a matter of time.  I believe within 2 decades intelligent life will be discovered and their technology may be 1 million years ahead of ours so imagine what they can teach us.  I believe they have found us already and are observing and infiltrating society.

The human race is destined to live on other planets and this will happen in the next few decades. So, don't worry about the weather because the weather is going to be different on other planets.

They are breeding like rabbits !

Food might be a problem down the track, if they have a few bad years weather wise.

What else can you do when the temperature is like -40 degrees C outside?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Oh you have to laugh at this. It just confirms why I am so sceptical when the reports of this crowd are false !

Irrelevant qualifications from who knows where

Hypocrisy - jetting about to tell people to stop flying Smiley LOL

And it just shows how much money is flowing about !

And worst of all the report was BS and based on greenie agenda !

Dr Rajendra Pachauri: the clown of climate change has gone

This absurd figure, with his PhD in the economics of railway engineering, should never have been given the IPCC job in the first place, writes Christopher Booker

The only sad thing about the resignation of Dr Rajendra Pachauri as chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is that it was brought about by allegations of sexual harassment by a young female employee of his Delhi research body, The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri), from which he has also now stepped down.

Laughably described as “the world’s leading climate scientist”, this absurd figure, with his PhD in the economics of railway engineering from an obscure US university, should never have been given the job in the first place. As a vegetarian, he jetted round the world exhorting everyone else to save the planet by giving up air travel and meat. Thanks to the prestige of his position, his institute was showered with millions of dollars by international institutions, from global banks to Yale University (not to mention £10 million from British taxpayers).

But above all, Pachauri, with the looks of a pantomime villain, should have resigned when, in 2010, the super-scary IPCC report over which he presided in 2007 was shown – not least by this column and by the assiduous researchers of my co‑author, Richard North – to have been full of wildly unscientific errors emanating from green activists.

When we traced its claim that the Himalayan glaciers would have all but melted by 2035 to an obscure Indian scientist quoted by WWF (a claim so mad that even the IPCC had to withdraw it), we were even more amazed to find that Pachauri had hired the man responsible to be Teri’s chief glacier expert.

He may now finally have gone, But the damage he did to the IPCC’s credibility as a serious scientific body is irreparable. What a pity the politicians of the West, led by President Obama and our own here in Britain, still don’t seem to have noticed.
