I am shock and disgusted with the negative reaction. I doubt there would be any reaction if he swore on the bible instead.
I think it's a great thing to have a muslim member of the parliament. I hope he is the reasonable voice of Islam.

As I believe in evolution I guess if taking the oath it would be with Darwin's 'On The Origins Of Species'. There is no relevance to the book, its an arbitrary item used more for ceremony than anything else.

I think I'd choose the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy to swear on.

Bob, I agree with you that it is hypocritical. I still find it difficult to understand why you would be shocked by the reaction based on your views which you have expressed here on many occasions. That's all.
And Bob, yes, I should know you by now, you'd think, but I don't. You keep contradicting yourself. Not that long ago you stated that you were against the teaching of the Bible and the Koran and that there should only be one religion ie Jainism. That does not sound like much of a choice to me :^O
OK....that's all..
Come on Eve. It's not against the law to be ignorant or stupid or be misled. Do I think people should live their life by the bible or Koran? No. Doesn't mean I would want to ban them from it. I'd rather they start thinking for themselves and come to the conclusion on their own.
When did I ever advocate Janism to be the only one religion. I was making a point that Janism does little harm to society vs Christianity and Islam. That's why you don't see me speaking against the former.

Hey Bob, will you be watching Wimbledon tonight? I think on 7TWO they will show the Radwanska vs Li Na match.
Ooo, that's going to be a great game, when is it on?

And the Jedi Knights religion is on the rise too. So someday they may take the oath on a Star Wars box set...

Not sure if you could actually do that.
An oath is either a statement of fact or a promise calling upon something or someone that the oath maker considers sacred, usually God, as a witness to the binding nature of the promise or the truth of the statement of fact.
Those who choose to taken an oath would usually do so because of what it means to them, not just a formality.

Unless people can define sacred or God, that point is a mute point. I have yet to find coherent definition of God. Christians say God is a spirit yet cannot define spirit.

Its scheduled for Centre Court at 11am which makes it 10pm here. Fox Sports is showing other games so am really hoping 7TWO will be showing it.
